In Their Words

In Their Words I am sad to inform you that Mr. James T. Jordan, an In Their Words Interviewee, passed away on the morning of December 27, 2009. His story has not gone up online as yet but he was featured in our 'Live Show' and Atrium Museum Exhibit.

He had the G.I. helmet with the bullet-hole in it. That along with the harrowing s...tory of how he came to get the bullet hole and the circumstances of retaining the helmet after the war were an inspiration. He stated (I paraphrase) "Whenever feel a little low. I just take out this helmet and think to myself but for the grace of God go I."

His is only one of many stories of service and sacrifice that should serve to remind us all of the extraordinary men and women who live among us everyday, everywhere.

At the close of this year, perhaps, we should reflect on the many blessings that we all have. One, of which, is living in the greatest, free-est nation on Earth. Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

David Elmore

    • Regan Mowdy I'm so sad to hear that, holding his helmet and hearing his story is a moment I'll never forget. He was a true inspiration.

In Their Words Stay tuned to the In Their Words website. Within the next few months we will be adding new content, more interviews and updates. We know we have take awhile to get back to this but we felt collecting the stories became more important as this WWII generation is not hanging around for too much longer. After all there a...re only three of us doing this work. We expect all of the interviews to be added in the future.

In Their Words AETN/In Their Words interview of Sally Yarberry at the Bob Herzfeld Memorial Library in Benton, Arkansas. the interview is apart of AETN Oral History Project collecting the stories of WWII veterans and civilians who contributed to the war effort. Sally Yarberry, Randle Yarberry (her husband), Amy Waller & Matt Beacha...m, AETN Production Technicians are seen in this video. This video was shot on a flip video camera as a part of our effort to include new technologies to the project. It is an unedited & experimental behind the scenes look at our work. Future inclusions will undoubtedly be better produced. Please enjoy the video and check out our website at www.intheirwords.org. Thank you.

        In Their Words

In Their Words If you are interested in World War II from the perspective of the men and women of Arkansas please enjoy this face book page as a taste of the things you'll see at www.intheirwords.org. You'll find stories great and small that are tear jerking, heart pounding, head reeling and more. Additionally, you'll discover that,... as a publicly sponsored website, no banner ads, pop ups and the like will appear.

More is coming too! We have to date 110 interviews online and that number will go up. Because, we have 500 interviews in house and more occurring as we speak. This will take time though, so we ask for your patience. There are three of us working on this and the process is time consuming and mind numbing in its detail. This site is also a resource for education and historical information. We will endeavor to keep you updated to changes and improvements to the site. Enjoy exploring the website. You will be rewarded with new insight into the lives and sacrifice of our forbears. Thank you.

          In Their Words

In Their Words When we travel Arkansas we meet many different people, eat at many different eateries and see many different places. The people are some of the finest you will ever meet, the food some of the best you will ever eat and, of course, virtually everywhere in Arkansas is beautiful. We will tell you about these places and pe...ople and post photographs of the same as time permits and the project progresses.

I cannot stress enough our pleasure to honor these men and women who have given so much of themselves and who continue to do so by allowing us to see and hear where they went and what they did to keep us free and prosperous and make Arkansas such a great place to live. In Their Words is Arkansas' salute to them. Please shake a veteran's (any veteran's) hand and say 'Thank You'.

With that, I will sign off for now and welcome you again to 'In Their Words' enjoy the web site.

In Their Words We sometimes go back and get those stories if they are outstanding in some fashion. However, we are often pressed for time and the veterans are often exhausted by the interview. Besides, we also hear many stories outside of the war that are just as fascinating and equally good subjects for other interviews such as a ve...teran who as an FBI agent in the 1950's infiltrated the KKK in south Arkansas to stop the lynching of African-American Arkansans, or the African American veterans who came back from fighting the greatest war in history only to have 'Jim Crow' America slap them around again. Or the veteran who dated Herman Goering's niece, or the ones who went on to fight in Korea and/or Vietnam. There are so many of them. Believe me, we would love to collect them all but there simply is not enough time, people or money to do it.

This blog will consist of regular updates of interesting asides in our collecting, preparing and posting of the veterans interviews on our web site.
