Just surviving winter feels like an accomplishment up here. I know, I know, it is only late October. Halloween is not quite here. I shouldn't go around looking for trouble, and today was spectacular--bright sunshine burned off the morning fog and glowed through the yellow leaves still hanging fro...

Slowly, but surely, we are making progress on our first volume in the Words Work series. About Work: Poems for Life's Labor is starting to take shape and we still hope it can see the light of day this winter.Do you have a favorite poem that fits the theme? We are always open to suggestions as we ...

I know it's coming. We had snow this weekend and it's only October so I can't live in denial. Winter is arriving early and it is likely to be a doosie.Which means I also have to face the fact that Jack is not as well trained as I hoped he would be by this point. It's hard to feel like a successfu...

for our new magazine, that is. In January, 2010, we will launch a quarterly magazine devoted to the people, places, and things that make the Lake Superior's Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan, both past and present, so compelling. But what to name this magazine?A dear friend calls the Keweenaw Penins...

I suppose the beavers really didn't know how clever they were being when they downed the "Stay On Trail" sign and added it to the pile of branches damming the stream.

You know, on second thought I've always suspected beavers of a wicked sense of humor. Went by this same spot a few days ago and the sign was gone (or washed away, or buried deeper...who knows).

Jack and I recently started a new route for our out-of-town walks. For this trek we get to pass a large pond full of water lilies and also cross a stream with the ubiquitous beaver damn partially blocking the way. Here Jack is on the scent of something, most likely the beaver who built the damn. ...

Hello Everyone,

I've just put up a new page on the web site specifically for teachers to provide information about Draw On Culture and how to receive a free downloadable lesson as well as teaching guides for how to use the free lesson with students. We hope you'll pass the link along to anyone you know, in the classroom... or a homeschooler, who could benefit from this. And as always, your feedback about the web page and how (or whether) it works for you is always appreciated.

Hope you're enjoying the fall and the new school year.

Thanks, Laura

Thimbleberry Press Since the number 9 is considered to be a mysterious and lucky number in Chinese tradition, and since today is 9/9/09, I thought I'd share a page from The Dragon's Daughters Return that includes a sidebar on just the symbolism of the number 9 (as well as a few cute kids photos, of course).

In case you can't read the sidebar text...
"Pronounce the word "nine" (jiu) and you are saying "forever" (jiu). Since we all want to live forever and longevity is a very important attribute in Chinese society, eating nine dishes at New Year or naming objects "nine-dragon cup." or "nine-dragon wall," helps reinforce the importance of long life. The ... Read MoreImperial Palace was built with nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine rooms. Nine is also very mysterious. Multiply nine by any number and then add the separate digits of the sum together and you will always get nine: 5 x 9 = 45; 4 + 5 = 9..."
