TONIGHT!!! Don't miss a FREE Presentation about Climate Change and Agriculture at SUNY Ulster. This informative presentation entitled, "The Role of Agriculture in Curbing Climate Change: Win-Win Scenarios", will be presented at CCEUC's Annual Meeting tonight at 6:30pm in the Student Lounge located in Vanderlyn Hall at ...the SUNY Ulster campus in Stone Ridge.
The keynote speaker, Jennifer G. Phillips, Assistant Professor at the Bard Center for Environmental Policy, will look at agriculture as both a source and a sink for greenhouse gases that are likely to be regulated in the future. Fortunately, many of the practices that will curb greenhouse gas production or lead to increased carbon storage are also ones that can increase farm productivity, lower costs, and lead to resilient, sustainable agro-ecosystems. Although in the early stages of research, many of these practices are both familiar and proven. Phillips will include a brief review of the role of greenhouse gases in climate regulation and the expected changes in store for the Northeast that focus on recent science and field research.
Refreshments will be served.
Hope to see you there!

FUNDING UPDATE
Dear Friend of Cornell Cooperative Extension,
First, I would like to thank you for your support of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County (CCEUC) in the recent Ulster County budget deliberations. You were awesome! Your contacts with local Legislators, letters, emails and presence at the public hear...ings and legislative meetings were clear, concise and persuasive. We were able to educate County Legislators and the public about the worth of the programs of CCEUC.
I want to update you on last week’s meeting of the Ulster County Legislature so you understand our present circumstance regarding CCEUC’s county funding.
The County Legislature, after numerous amendment discussions about the level of funding for contract agencies (of which we are one) ranging from 75% to 100% of 2009 funding levels, voted to reject their own budget and, therefore, revert back to the County Executive’s initial budget recommendations.
In the County Executive’s budget, CCEUC was not assigned a recommended level of funding. However, the County Executive allocated 75% of the 2009 level of funding available to the County Legislature for contract agencies. The County Legislature must recommend contract agency funding, which it did not do at the budget meeting. So at this moment, we have no funding assigned to us for 2010.
I will continue to speak with County Legislators and the County Executive’s office over the next few days, and will keep you updated as we learn more.
The County Legislature will meet one last time in 2009 on December 16. The Ways and Means Committee has proposed a resolution to fund contract agencies at 75%. If the proposal passes, we will start 2010 with $266,475.
This is a loss of $88,825 of funding below last year’s appropriation, which will negatively and severely impact programs and staff at CCEUC.We may need you to advocate in 2010 for restoration of funding for CCEUC. If this is unclear or you have any questions, please feel free to call me at (845) 340-3990.
