The 5 Deadly Senses is the newest series from Jophe...n Stein. Using both humor and poignant intimacy, Stein narrates a story of exploration and progress through work inspired by Hollywood musicals and motifs reminiscent of early Romantic Comedies.

Jophen Stein is a graduate of the Laguna College of Art and Design. After establishing the
Snootson Family Showcase in 2004 his distinctive style has gained national recognition over the past years. Despite the minor set backs of being banned from Idaho and Iowa. Jophen stein continues the SFSC series from his studio in Pomona.

The Snootson Family Showcase [SFSC] is a collection of narrative, historical, and character based art. While there are a variety of subjects and motifs presented in the SFSC, a principle underlining theme exists concerning the correlation between antiquity and modernity. With the help of literary devices such as irony and double entendres, the SFSC parodies contemporary social life with the eras and precedence that created it.

The Box gallery To commemorate the date of the burning of Rome, The Box contemporary art gallery is proud to present new works by artists Craig “Skibs” Barker, Jeff Felker, and Michael Pukac. This collection of mixed media figurative paintings opened at the Costa Mesa gallery on Saturday, July 18, 2009. The exhibition will run throug...h October 3, 2009.

July 18 marks the anniversary of the most known burning of Rome, where in 64 A.D., popular legend reports Nero played his lyre after setting fire to the imperial city. Though contemporary historical texts disagree on the responsibility and duration of the incident, its cultural significance remains extant even in the present. With a suspicious nod to Nero and his curious relation to the feminine as well as an acknowledgement to the import of the date, artists Craig “Skibs” Barker, Jeff Felker, and Michael Pukac have joined us in commemoration and in tribute to the female form.

Craig “Skibs” Barker combines pop and punk, personal history and archetypes, the intimate and the voyeur, to create his images of the female form. His mixed media paintings are a unique snapshot into both the psyche and the situation of his subject, producing a semi-narrative, documentary image of form and desire.

Sacramento based artist, Jeff Felker, creates visual narratives exploring themes reformulated from both life and literature. Emotions, dreams, reality and color contrast to form poignant yet sometimes unsettling images. His paintings betray universal emotions in unique circumstances.

Hailing from Los Angeles, Michael Pukac’s works seem to reside in a dualism. Esoteric, yet accessible, surreal yet somehow classic, serious yet whimsical, Pukac manipulates metallic and acrylic in an inventive, fresh manner to achieve heartfelt depictions of the heroic feminine.

The Box gallery “It is a rare and special honor” says curator Johnny Sampson, “to be exhibiting an artist of such caliber and scope as Joseph Hawa.” His white on white series demands an interaction between the viewer and the work; each piece is pure, raw and unbelievably sophisticated and must be interpreted through the viewer’s own ...frame of reference. Hawa’s negation of color allows the viewer to insert his or her own perception into the work, making each piece a personal experience into the sublime.

Painstakingly precise and intricate, Santa Ana based Hawa’s sophisticated sculptural paintings explore texture and the dramatic dance between shadow and light to form his geometric, abstract, and representational masterpieces. Urbane, yet undeniably human, his work elicits emotions as pure as his color palate. It is this unique ability to inspire that sets him apart, both as an artist and as a person.

The season surrounding the equinox is a ti...me where darkness and light have equal times to co-exist. Artist’s Duane Hosein and Anthony Mangicapra have taken the charge and created an exhibition worthy of this time of change and hope. Above and Below is an exhibition where each artist has researched the underlying concepts of heaven and hell and put those ideas to canvas, paper, and music.

Trinidad born Florida artist Duane Hosein’s pen and ink works are a testament to his mastery and control. “I approach every piece with the fervor of an iron-fisted dictator” Hosein admits, “It is all about the detail. It is tedious, but therapeutic”. His work for Above and Below is the culmination of research into different religious and cultural interpretations of hell and the creatures and experiences that inhabit the demonic region.

New York artist Anthony Mangicapra’s canvases are dedicated to the heavens for this exhibition. After extensive research into canonical, occult, theosophical, and ancient texts, Mangicapra’s works portray the divine as no other artist could capture. “I want to create beauty” Mangicapra says, “but I can’t control that. I am just a conduit for ideas”.

To accompany the artwork, both artists have combined to create a soundtrack under Hoor-Paar Kraat to be released by Goat Eater Arts in concurrence with the exhibition. Mangicapra describes the experience as “painting with sound”, where everyday sounds lose their original qualities and re-emerge manipulated into a new language of meanings.
