Don't take it too seriously, it's just a list based on my personal choices, and obviously as subjective as it can be. Don't whine if your rider isn't on it or if he's not rated very high. #10 Roger ...

"It is noteworthy in table 4.3 that worthwhile drag reductions were given by partial fairings such as those shown in figures 4.6 and 4.7. (In some cases these were simply curved sheets mounted on the handlebars.) The principal reason for this kind of drag reduction appears to be the reduction of the effective area. Wit......hout any fairing, the air billows out around the rider's bluff body, disturbing air over an area much greater than that of the body alone. An upstream streamlined shape (such as a partial fairing) can reduce this disturbance. A partial fairing can also have a favorable distribution of pressure. The effective drag coefficient for a front fairing, such as the lowest one in figure 4.8, can actually be negative (ref. 2, p.312)."

I came across an unsurprising insight into the role that engineering plays in the cycling world hour record......

How much of the the cycling hour record is due to better engineering? This graph made by Richard Neptune et.al at the University of Texas at Austin shows the role of aerodynamic bikes and seating positions. One study's estimation is that as much as 60% of the hour records in past years have come due to engineering alon......e. I'm a popular cycling blogger on the interwebs. Also a mechanical enginer cum electro optician by skill. Friends know I just love to ride my bike.

I appreciate projects that are simple, can actually be made using novel technologies and which really work well for the task at hand. Among them are those that try and see if pedal power can be applied in any fashion to solving practical problems, however outrageous they maybe......
