A collection of quotes from bloggers who have recently read my novel, The World in Half. "Henriquez's gifts for lyrical prose, complex characters and sharp dialogue shine in one of the year's most moving and memorable novels." - Largehearted Boy “[An] unbelievably good first novel......
Peggy at 1:11pm May 14
It is really quite impressive- and I'm not just saying that because your mother is one of my favorite people. You have a great talent. It was a joy to read. I rarely find the time to finish what I start- and I couldn't put The World In Half down.

Kit at 1:44pm May 14
I totally agree Pegs. Usually it takes me a few weeks to finish a book because I only read just before I fall asleep. I only put this book down long enough to sleep. I'm also reading her short story collection now -- so far my favorite story is Mercury. Did you read Come Together...?
Peggy at 2:43pm May 14
I did- right after I finished her book. Loved that too-

I plan on buying the book...Nick Allen is my hubby. I'm very impressed that Isabel Allende commented...she's my absolute favorite author. I've read almost everything by her and if she likes it, I'm sure you've got talent!

Great review, Cristina. It's great just to see Chicago Sum-Times has chosen to review it!

I'll be reading at my local library (it's also the place where I wrote much of my novel). If you're in or around Hinsdale, come say hello!

LOVE the story of how you became a writer and very much appreciate your willingness to share those "human" moments- I wonder what the boy who gave you that journal would say now? What a nice young man to take that approach- a rare person.

My guilty writing-origin admission: I knew I wanted to become a writer when I (unfairly!) lost a story writing contest in 1st grade. :) Great post.

In my humble opinion, you have what it takes...guts. thanks for sharing.

One of the hazards of visiting so many great bookstores in a row: I kept buying books! By the time tour was over, my suitcase was VERY heavy...

same here. while in seattle, we visited the elliott bay bookstore. at the request of my daughter, i bought several of ivan doig's books so that she could finish his montana trilogy. then bought your books at the university bookstore (another request by her so that it could be signed). also brought along books for nadine and hazel that were ... Read Morewritten by my sister-in-law's sister-in-law (homicide in hardcover by kate carlisle). my carry-on was rather heavy (thank heaven for wheelies).
btw, nadine, hazel and i apologize for not thinking of inviting you out after your signing. we only thought of it after returning to our hotel. pls forgive us - it would have been fun.

From a review in the April 26, 2009 edition of The Dallas Morning News: "Henríquez reveals complex characters and themes that probe deeply into the fiber of human relationships and where we belong.... She is a clear, direct writer. But this isn't a simple book...

Jonathan Yardley reviewed my novel in the April 26, 2009 Washington Post. Here's a snippet from the last paragraph: "Latin America is simultaneously desperate and hypnotic, and Henríquez gets this aspect of it exactly right.... The World in Half is engaging and touching."

Cristina, it was terrific seeing you in Seattle. Nadine, Hazel and I enjoyed hearing your talk; now that we're all back home, it's time to begin reading!

Hi! Congratulations on your first novel. I can't wait to purchase it this weekend. I wish you were doing book signings in this vicinity! I guess NYC is the closest?
