And David Lister (The Independent) wrote:
Ray Davies ended his gig in Hammersmith last weekend with the words: "Remember, when I'm gone there won't be another." It wasn't the most modest exit. But after one of the best gigs of the year, it was hard to argue. The former Kinks front man gave a generous three- hour show, starting with an acoustic set followed by a rousing set with a rock band and climaxing with a reinterpretation of Kinks' classics with the Crouch End Festival Chorus.

The idea of using a choir alongside a band for rock music proved so effective, and at times so genuinely moving, that I wondered why it was such a rare occurrence. Davies is one of the greatest English songwriters, yet still curiously underrated.

Crouch End Festival Chorus For those who weren't at last Saturday's sell-out Ray Davies concert in Birmingham Symphony Hall, this is how one reviewer described CEFC's contribution to the musical proceedings:

"The Crouch End Festival Chorus files onto stage for the second half of
the show, again with additional support from Ray's band - and I'm
tick...led pink when they begin with a rendition of my all-time favourite
Kinks track, 'Shangri-La'. It's no exaggeration to say that there were
shivers running down my spine for this one, the choir sounds incredible
- this is no gimmick, these tracks really work with this accompaniment.

The version of 'See My Friends' - performed just with Ray and
the backing of the choir, no instrumentation - drives this home even
more. It is spellbinding."

Thanks to reviewer, Paul Broome (Midlands Rocks, http://www.midlandsrocks.co.uk/reviews/live-rock-reviews/raydavies_symphonyhall_12dec2009).

Crouch End Festival Chorus Haydn Die Schöpfung (The Creation)

Crouch End Festival Chorus
London Orchestra da Camera
Miriam Allan soprano
Joshua Ellicott tenor
Stephan Loges baritone
David Temple conductor

Written by Josef Haydn between 1796 and 1798, this oratorio in three parts tells the story of the creation of the world, as depicted in the Books of ...Genesis and Psalms, and in Milton’s Paradise Lost. The writing in this choral masterpiece is full of wonder – Haydn’s depiction of the creation of light is particularly heart-stopping – and the famous choruses include ‘The Heavens are Telling’.

Crouch End Festival Chorus has performed the piece twice before, in 1991 and again in 2000 at the reopening of Somerset House, but this is the first time that we will be singing it in German.

The performance will feature special visual effects - a combination of lighting states and images projected onto the choir to enhance the narrative of the story.

We are very pleased to perform this concert in support of The Art Room, a charity that offers art as therapy to children and young people from 5 to 15 who are marginalised or disengaged from education, or have particular social or learning needs. A new branch has recently opened in Islington, and the children have been working with well-known local illustrator Jane Ray on images relating to the theme of Creation. Some of their work will be on display at the Barbican on the day of the concert, and in the images projected during the singing. A collection will be made following the performance.

Crouch End Festival Chorus War Requiem by Benjamin Britten

Crouch End Festival Chorus
London Orchestra da Camera
David Temple conductor
Lynda Russell soprano
Robert Murray tenor
Stephan Loges baritone
Finchley Children's Music Group

Britten’s great work combines the traditional Latin Mass of the Dead with poems by Wilfred Owen, the soldier-poet who die...d in the 1st World War aged 25. Britten uses adult and children’s voices to poignant effect. The Requiem was a huge success at its premiere, at the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral.

Crouch End Festival Chorus returns to the Barbican following summer performances at the BBC Proms and at Kenwood House.

Crouch End Festival Chorus This wonderful choral symphony by the young Vaughan Williams brought him acclaim as a composer - and you can hear why. Settings of poems by Whitman evoke the changing aspects of the sea, its beauty and deadly power.

In contrast, Fauré’s moving Requiem has a serenity and relative simplicity that has made it one of the mo...st popular choral works. This programme is ideally suited to the responsiveness, warmth and accuracy that Crouch End Festival Chorus brings to such music.
