Mark It's like saying visiting the States is like subsidizing the war in Iraq. Many people don't agree with that war. If the US government didn't have the cash, and they pretty much don't now that they've broke the country (everyone will pay for their mistakes and greed soon enough unfortunately) they wouldn't be fighting......wherever they feel they need to. Bush is an idiot and hopefully Obama can dig the country out of this one.......

I'm sure you're doing a lot for freedom and helping out family and friends. I can tell that you're one of these radicals that, if running a government was left to you you'd turn into one of the same as Castro. Power freak leftest! Hey, you really think most governments get involved in wars "for humanitarian reasonS" to "free the people of Iraq" as ... See MoreBush said? If that were true why isn't he in Samalia or some other dead poor country? BECAUSE THER IS NO MONEY IN IT, DUDE!!! Next time you want to find the real reason for a war, STOP LISTENING TO THE PRESS AND PROPAGANDA STATIONS LIKE CNN! Dig deeper. Follow the money trail and you'll find your smoking gun! I'm not trying to pick a fight with you I'm just saying that the so-called truth we're all being fed is mostly lies. It's time to wake up!

Look into Cuba before the revolution. The most prosperous country in the world (do I really need to spell it?) was siphoning hundreds of millions of dollars a year (billions in todays market) from a third world country (cuba) and doing what for the people? Exactly, keeping them poor and uneducated, tossing them a nickel here and there. Do a little ... See Morehistory and you'll understnad. Unfortunately Castro lied and when he won the war he didn't give the country to the people as promised. And the American government didn't play thier cards right and that's where we are today. I don't have an answer to the problems other than a slow methodical change to democracy would be the way to go. Radical change would destroy the people and the country. The billionares would move in and turn it into another crime infested monopoly.

Mark Sure Pablo, let's give more cash to the government of the US and starve the Cubans a little more! I think I'd rather spend money on my Cuban friends than risk my life on a Miami vacation, anyday! Furthermore, it's the US government that has created many of todays problems (and yesterday's) in the latin countries of the... western hemisphere. I agree ... Read Morewith many of your comments, but not this one, sorry! It's like saying "don't visit the sates since the money will just go to line the pockets of corrupt bankers that have pretty much put the world economy into a tail spin". Does that really make any sense?

Canadians should not be subsidizing this tyranny -- directly or indirectly. If you want sun, try Miami, the Dominican Republic or St. Lucia. Don't go to Cuba.

Well, you got me there Marko, since you know me I guess I don't need to tell you anything more but I have to set the record straight. My wife is cuban (and not an 18 year old either thanks). conducted clandestinely, as international rights organizations are not welcome there. While they did their best to protect the anonynmity of their sources, changing names, dates and locations, they concede that their efforts were not entirely successful, and some of the Cubans who co-operated by providing first-ha...nd accounts and documents have been punished by the Castro regime.

While many in the West hoped that Raul would move Cuba away from the worst excesses of his brother and into a new era of freedom, as this report makes clear, for Cuba's jailers and torturers, it's business as usual.

In Raul's Cuba, as in Fidel's, dissent remains punishable by indefinite imprisonment, unemployment is considered antisocial and the government can lock away anyone a summary trial finds guilty of "dangerousness," a legal catch-all.

Once incarcerated, political prisoners are denied medical care, family visits and le...gal aid. Solitary confinement is a common and seemingly arbitrary form of discipline.

We have criticized HRW's biased, anti-Israel reporting in the past, and will continue to do so. But in this report, it has produced exemplary work. Cuba's eagerness to welcome Westerners is limited only to tourists, and the HRW's research was

National Post editorial board: Don't go to CubaPosted: November 20, 2009, 10:30 AM by NP Editor

As the weather turns against us and holidays approach, many Canadians will eagerly begin to plan their winter escapes to hotter climes. Each year, hundreds of thousands of us travel to the island of Cuba, to enjoy th...e sun, surf and hospitality for which the island is justly famous.

But the island is infamous, too. While tourists rarely bother to venture far beyond their comfortable resorts, if they would, they would see a nation where the worst excesses of authoritarianism remain as entrenched as ever. This point is well made by the recent Human Right's Watch (HRW) report, New Castro, Same Cuba, that lays bare the state of freedom in Cuba, under the new leadership of the slightly younger Castro brother, Raul.

Remember Ilich Ram... See Moreírez Sánchez, alias Carlos the Jackal? He is a Venezuelan terrorist and convicted murderer who is currently serving a life sentence in a French prison.

Here is an excerpt from a 1993 New York Times article: "Sought for years for a string of bombings, assassinations and attacks that included the kidnapping of 11 OPEC oil ministers in Vienna in 1975, Carlos became known as ''the Jackal.'' A wanted poster showing his wide, impassive face in dark glasses over an open-collar shirt became an emblem of defiance for left-wing terrorist movements around the globe.......The French anti-terrorist magistrate who developed this case, Judge Jean-Louis Bruguiere, is pursuing three more investigations against him, according to the authorities. The probes concern Carlos's role in a bombing in the rue Marbeuf in Paris in 1982 that killed a pregnant woman and wounded 63 other people, for another bombing of an express train to Toulouse the same year that took five lives, and for the bombing of a Left Bank drugstore in 1974 that killed two. Judge Bruguiere visited Hungary Wednesday after the authorities there decided to open the Communist secret service files on Carlos to French investigators. He returned with a stack of documents on Carlos's activities in Budapest between 1979 and 1985."
