Curzon Cinemas NOWHERE BOY / Q&A with DIR. SAM TAYLOR-WOOD
TICKETS: £15, £12.50 members

Thursday 10th December, Curzon Mayfair, 6.15pm

Curzon Cinemas is delighted to welcome director Sam Taylor Wood for a post-screening discussion after a preview of her debut feature about John Lennon NOWHERE BOY.

BOOK NOW for a very special preview of t...he acclaimed feature debut of the artist.

The event is sponsored by our good friends Jameson Irish Whiskey with a complimentary cocktail for all ticket holders.

NOWHERE BOY [15]

Director: Sam Taylor Wood |Starring: Anne-Marie Duff, Aaron Johnson, Kristin Scott Thomas • United Kingdom 2009 • 98 mins

Renowned artist Sam Taylor Wood’s directorial debut, Nowhere Boy follows the turbulent life of a 15 year-old John Lennon (remarkable newcomer Johnson) on the cusp of forming the Beatles, using rock and roll as a form of escape from his troubled and complicated family life. Brilliantly recreating 1950s Liverpool, the film’s witty, acerbic and insightful script – which is also musically attuned – is courtesy of Matt Greenhalgh, who wrote the Ian Curtis biopic, Control.
Taylor Wood’s direction is impressively economical, and she draws fine performances from Scott Thomas (I've Loved You So Long) as Lennon’s domineering Aunt Mimi and Duff (Is Anybody There?) as his mother.

---We urge you to book in advance for one of the most hotly anticipated films of the year either online or via our phone room 0871 703 3989---

Curzon Cinemas UNMADE BEDS / Q&A with Dir. ALEXIS DOS SANTOS
TICKETS: £12, £9 members

Friday 11th December, Curzon Soho, 6.50pm

Curzon Cinemas is delighted to welcome director Alexis dos Santos for a post-screening discussion after the screening of his second feature UNMADE BEDS.

UNMADE BEDS [15]

Starring: Deborah Francois, Michiel Huisma...n, Fernando Tielve • United Kingdom 2009 • 97 mins • English, Spanish, and French with English subtitles

Alexis Dos Santos’ vivid and seductive second feature follows its endearing metropolitan drifters around a wholly persuasive nocturnal landscape of grubby flat shares, hipster warehouse parties and drug-related friendships. Fernando Tielve and Déborah François (The Page Turner) play Axl and Vera, a free-roaming Spanish naïf and a New Wave-y Belgian heartbreaker trying to forge their respective paths to happiness.
With shades of both Michel Gondry and Wong Kar-wai, this is an idiosyncratic, atmospheric and absolutely winning anti-romance that also just happens to be the year’s coolest paean to good music, bad hangovers and lost love.

friday 27 november 6.50pm. tickets: £12.00 / £9.00 cineastes
SOHO

Curzon Cinemas is delighted to welcome first-time feature film director Paul King and actors Ed Hogg and Simon Farnaby for a post-screening discussion after the sc...reening of Bunny And The Bull. Paul King is known for his BBC cult TV series The Mighty Boosh, and his debut-feature stars some of the cast from the series.

***PLEASE NOTE: This event takes place at Curzon Soho, not at Renoir Cinema as previously advertised. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.***

Bunny and the Bull [15]
Director: Paul King • Starring: Verónica Echegui, Simon Farnaby, Edward Hogg • United Kingdom 2009 • 101 mins
The highly anticipated first feature by Mighty Boosh director Paul King (and starring a clutch of Boosh regulars) is unlikely to disappoint fans of their surreal, anarchic comedy. Stephen (Hogg) hasn’t left his house in months, since a disastrous trip around Europe with his best friend Bunny (Farnaby). When an infestation of mice throws Stephen’s obsessive domestic routine into chaos, he starts to reflect on the adventure that his pal concocted, allegedly to help Stephen recover from a broken heart. But Bunny’s idea of a rollicking good time proves at odds with Stephen’s yen for cultural improvement. Sandra Hebron, The Times BFI London Film Festival.

Curzon Cinemas Kinēmatheque presents: DIARY FOR MY CHILDREN Plus Q&A with co-writer Éva Pataki
sunday 22 november 12noon
tickets: £10.00/£8.00 cineastes
RENOIR

Kinēmatheque is a strand curated by Curzon Cinemas and Second Run DVD that’s dedicated to celebrating world cinema. For this special event we welcome one of the world’s foremost f...emale directors to discuss the film that earned her the Special Jury Prize at Cannes.

***PLEASE NOTE: Due to unforeseen circumstances Márta Mészáros is unable to attend this screening, as previous advertised. However, we are delighted that Éva Pataki, renowned co-writer of the films in the Diary Trilogy, has kindly agreed to come from Hungary to introduce the screening and take part in the Q&A which will be hosted by broadcaster and writer John Riley. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.***

DIARY FOR MY CHILDREN (12)
Director: Márta Mészáros. Starring: Zsuzsa Czinkóczi, Anna Polony, Jan Nowicki. Hungary 1982. 102 mins. Hungarian with subtitles
This deeply personal work portrays the impact of individuals upon history and of historical forces upon individual lives. Neither purely fictional nor entirely autobiographical, the film is a reflection on Mészáros’ own experiences channelled via Juli, a young woman returning home to Budapest from the Soviet Union where her parents were exiled and had died. Scarred by the wounds of the past, she is repulsed to see the very same spectre of Stalinist oppression now rife in her homeland.

Tickets: £11.00/£9.00 cineastes

The ...hmvcurzon Screen Salons are a series of illustrated talks, offering a deeper insight into some of the latest releases. This Salon is a brief guide to the celebrated works of Michael Haneke, who is now a dominant force in European cinema, followed by a screening of his stunning Palme d’Or winning film The White Ribbon. Presented by Ian Haydn Smith, Editor of the International Film Guide.

White Ribbon [15]
Director: Michael Haneke • Austria and Germany • 144 mins • German with English subtitles

Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, The White Ribbon confirms Haneke as one of the most important and consistent filmmakers of his time. His latest masterpiece is an analysis of how a small Protestant village in northern Germany became a ‘petri dish’ for fascism during World War I. Within this microcosm a series of disturbing and distressing incidents take place, which gradually assume the character of a ritual of punishment and torture – yet the identity of the perpetrators becomes a source of mystery.

A SERIOUS MAN (15)
Director: Joel and Ethan Coen. Starring: Michael Stuhlbarg, Sari Lennick, Richard Kind. US 2009. 105 mins.

The story of one man’s life viciously unspooling, and imbued with their characteristic eye for character and humour, A Serious Man ranks with the Coen brother’s finest work. It’s 1967 and Larry Gopnik (Stuhlbarg, Afterschool), a physics professor at a quiet Midwestern university, has just been informed by his wife that she is leaving him for one of his colleagues. Larry’s unemployable brother Arthur (Kind) is sleeping on the couch, while his children eschew any sense of responsibility. With these trials of life, Larry seeks advice from three different rabbis but can anyone help him cope with his afflictions and become a righteous person – a mensch – a serious man?

Curzon Cinemas welcomes co-directors Hanno Höfer and Constantin Popescu to the stage to discuss their new film based on five urban legends from Communist Romania. ...We regret that Cristian Mungiu, Razvan Marculescu and Ioana Uricaru are now unable to attend this event, as previously advertised.

Director: Hanno Höfer, Razvan Marculescu, Crisitian Mungiu, Constantin Popescu, Ioana Uricaru • Romania 2009 • 131 mins • Romanian with English subtitles

From the creators of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days comes an unconventional personal history of the late communist period in Romania, the so-called ‘The Golden Age’, in reality the worse in Romania’s history. Tales From the Golden Age adapts for screen the most popular urban myths of the period. Comic, bizarre, surprising myths abounded, myths that drew on the often-surreal events of everyday life under Ceausescu’s regime.
