The week before the San Diego International Triathlon was a busy one with a solid week of training. The race included a 1k swim, a 30k bike, and a 10k run. This Spring, CycleOps Power sponsored a PowerTap contest in conjunction with a cycling camp hosted by Milwaukee-based cycling team, Team Extreme. CycleOps hosted an essay contest that almost every single "camper" participated in. Campers submitted essays and the best essay was awarded a PowerTap. The PowerTap was gi...ven to the camper at the beginning of the camp, and camp leader, Tom Schuler, guided the riders on how to use power in training for cycling.
The winner of the essay contest, "Why I want to train with power" was Rick Amen. Jim--the team leader, just sent us an update on Rick's racing this season along with some photos. He says...
"Our racing season is winding down, and I wanted to give you some feedback. We’ve had an awesome season as a team and are ranked 4th in Team Points for the WCA series. It all started with our camp. Thanks again for being a sponsor. Most of us are shifting to train with power more regularly.
"Rick Amen has had a spectacular season. Given his essay, it would seem that the PowerTap made a huge difference. For example, he took first place in the Chiropractic Partners Criterium 5/30/09 and won the Green Bush Road Race for the ToAD on 6/26/09. He has had multiple podium appearances and took the Silver Medal at the State Championships in Ripon on 6/13/09. I believe he is upgrading to a Cat. 3 at the end of the season...

What's your Mont Ventoux?
While not as imposing as Mont Ventoux, my challenge a few years back was RATPOD. Held in Dillon, Montana each year, RATPOD (Ride Around The Pioneers in One Day) is a 155 mile journey over mountain passes and through verdant valleys. It is also a challenging early season ride the proved too much... for me the first year.
I went into my first RATPOD in good shape with a dozen centuries to my credit. But climbing over 6700 foot Badger Pass and pushing around the Pioneers was too much. At the midpoint of the ride, I had to lie down for half an hour to recover from pushing too hard.
Behind on my schedule I was then beset by winds and a thunderstorm that nearly blew me and other riders off the road. I caught a sag ride into the afternoon pie stop wet and cold. For the next 30 minutes I sat huddled with other riders under the tarps until the storm passed and the sun came out.

RATPOD - Part 2
I managed to get back on the bike and finish the final leg into town, marveling at the piles of hail lining the road from the thunderstorm. I made it 133 miles out of the 157 that first time, but was determined to complete the full ride.
The next year I returned, found riding partners who better matched m...y speed and ability and we circumnavigated the Pioneer Mountains. Our time was 9 hours and 20 minutes of riding, with an average speed of 16.1 mph. Total time from start to finish with breaks was close to 12 hours. Our reward – dinner, a local microbrew, sore muscles and a T-shirt. But I took home the knowledge that I had completed a challenging ride that still stands as my single day record.
