Have you explored other ways to update your site? With the technology available now there must be an easier and faster way.

If it costs money, I would be willing to donate to such a good project. I think if you start a fund raising drive people, genealogy associations and private companies will be willing to donate money and/or services.

Just a thought.

Cyndi's List

Cyndi's List It must be a full moon because I'm getting weird e-mails again. Two today asking me about technology issues totally unrelated to what I do. SQL date string conversion and a photolisting data feed. Guess what! I'm not in charge of everything on the Internet!!!

Caroline - bite your tongue!
Carolyn - that's funny, because wouldn't that be the opposite of what we do? The tree has already been planted, we're just digging up the roots!

Cyndi's List

Cyndi's List Just deleted a very old gopher link. So old that most of you don't even know what a gopher link is. Nor do you need to know. It just makes me feel old, in Internet years.

Our first computer was really advanced - it had two floppy drives - one for the program, and one for the data - who needed a hard drive????? It was a Sanyo MBC 550 and was "90% compatible with IBM programs - who knew that the 10% was the graphics - i.e., anything appearing on the screen <ROFL> So we either used Sanyon special programs or wrote our own. Talk about learning fast!

All this talk of gopher neglects its 3 companions: Archie, Veronica and Jughead. And, of course, there was our early means of cybertransport: telnet. If you wanted to download a file, you needed to use FTP.
Who says the old days weren't fun?

Mary My favorite part of Cyndi's List is the "new links submitted" section - a daily update of sites - accessed through the main index on the left side of the screen. I look at it every morning.

Greg Hoilman Cyndi's list is the best Gen site around I have used it for many years.

Cyndi's List

Cyndi's List I'm getting tired of commercial entities (vendors, professional researchers, etc.) posting their links as "new" multiple times. I just delete the duplicates, so it is a waste of my time and theirs as well. And it won't get them categorized any quicker!

I'd be tempted to delete all entries, not just the duplicates, just for wasting my time.

Sandy, I HAVE been tempted! Through the years I've learned to step away from it, think it through after I let the irritation pass. Then I follow the policy that I set for my site - all things related to genealogy and family history (including commercial ventures) as long as they don't indicate anything illegal or fraudulent.

Cyndi's List

Cyndi's List This is interesting. I have had Facebook button links on the site for a few months now. But I posted this on my mailing list and suddenly a flood of people find the Facebook page. I think this once again proves that people ignore a lot of the graphics on my site. It is all about the text.

Well I can't speak for others, but I am so familiar with your site now that I just hit my browser, then the link for the new sites and/or go to your directory to find what I may want to search for. Once in awhile I see things on the sides, but they
are usually not relevent to me, at least not at the time.

It could certainly serve as a good place to brainstorm and generate ideas to guide our searches. I had worked on genealogy just a little in the nineties, but only this year return to the search with a passion. Your lists have provided so much valuable information for me that I have been suggesting them to friends who are beginning genealogy.

Annette Cupps

Annette Cupps I have hit a brick wall with my Grandmothers parents. William Bordie Goodwin(Adopted off of an Indian Reservation) Approximate birth 1898 death Aug. 4, 1973. Mary Goodwin is my Great Grandmother. They lived in Morris, Alabama on Happy Top Road. I am looking for information on how I would find Bordie's adoption records. I do not know the tribe.

Annette, I'm really lacking in my knowledge of adoption research. I do know that every state is different - whether records are open or closed; how they kept records, where they kept records, etc. You know his birth year and you know his mother's name (is that his birthmother?), and a residence. I would find a guide on doing research in Alabama (... Read Moreonline or book) and determine if there were adoption records back then. There may not have been in that time period. I have a great-aunt who was "adopted," which in my family's history meant she came to live with my family when her father farmed out the kids after mom died. There was never a formal adoption as we would have today.
