'It is possible to create a 50-50 chance of avoiding a rise in global average temperature of more than 2˚C, which many scientists regard as the threshold for 'dangerous' climate change.'

The Copenhagen conference is underwayFrom December 7 to 18, representatives from around 200 countries are gathered in Copenhagen for the UN summit on climate change, which aims to agree a successor to the Kyoto Protocol. It is the culmination of several years of detailed negotiations to shape a deal that will cut CO2 e...missions and limit global warming to no more than 2ºC.The conference is considered by some as the most important international meeting since World War II. DFID’s White Paper describes the negotiations as potentially ‘the most important development deal of the decade.’ Climate change threatens to make poverty the future for millions of people. A strong and fair global climate change deal will be crucial to how we tackle poverty in the future. The UK is determined to secure a far reaching political and financial commitment at Copenhagen.High on the agenda will be:the level of emissions cuts for both developed and developing countries
finance to help developing countries adapt to climate change
governance of finance delivery and international institutions
the role of carbon markets
targets to reduce deforestation
the development of and sharing of new technologies

DFID Livelihoods News A GREAT VIDEO TO WATCH. Africa has 874 million ha of land suitable for agriculture and vast water resources. Yet agriculture faces growing challenges of water scarcity, declining soil fertility, land degradation, erratic rainfall and a growing demand for food. People are Africa’s greatest asset. In sub-Saharan Africa, ...70% of people involved in agriculture are small holder farmers and their knowledge and practice demonstrates the opportunities from investing in agriculture. If the markets and policies are right, water management for agriculture makes good business sense. This video presents examples showing that investment in water for small holder agriculture can, and does, pay.
