DOCOMOMO/US, Georgia Chapter, Inc. Atlanta's Whittaker School on Huff road. DOCOMOMO Georgia thinks that this may have been designed by Hudson, Sheffer, & Associates, with L. Miles Sheffer as one of the partners. Does anyone have additional information?

The decline of Atlanta’s Whittaker School started before it even opened, a campus built in 1959 for a historically black neighborhood already doomed to obsolescence.

Here's Sheffer's obituary (edited) from 2002 AJC:

L. Miles Sheffer was an architect who specialized in school construction and helped maintain a solid foundation for his Ansley Park homefront. Mr. Sheffer designed the landmark Buccaneer Motel on Jekyll Island, the prototype for Shoney's restaurants and resort communities as well.

An Ansley Park resident for 30 years, he had been president of his neighborhood civic association and worked assiduously to protect its heritage of single-family residences.

Mr. Sheffer was the first architect the state hired to supervise school construction, said his partner, George Grant of Atlanta. Before that, the state relied on draftsmen. Mr. Sheffer designed Oconee High School in Watkinsville, Austin Walden Middle School in Atlanta and Athens Central High School.

He was devoted to geometry in his designs, said Mr. Grant. His school designs tended to be rectilinear or octagonal. He liked the octagonal shape because it provided the maximum interior space for the least amount of exterior material, said Mr. Grant.

"Mr. Sheffer was an architect of the old school. He knew how to design without the aid of a computer," said the firm's lawyer, Fielder Martin of Duluth.

"He knew how to administer a contract to the benefit of his client and still keep on good terms with the general contractor," said Mr. Martin. "He was a walking encyclopedia of architectural principles and construction contracts."

Survivors include his wife, Marie Sheffer; a daughter, Deirdre Grubbs of Charlotte; a son, M. Lewallen Sheffer of Portsmouth, N.H.; two sisters, Marguerite Renahan and Mary Kicklighter, both of Tucker; and four grandchildren.

Thanks for the info. The school reminds me of the abandoned C&S branch on Moreland, the one on stilts, with bridges, and cylinders: cool buildings probably never well suited or placed for their original purpose.
