I had a discussion thread on my fan page (birthyourway.org childbirth education) about this. The censuses there was that in general that was a bad idea written by a woman who giving mixed singles about the benefits and reasons to keep men out. I for one, don't agree with the concept in general, but birth situations need to be individualized. So ... See Morewomen and men may agree with the article. One thing I think is important to note, is that the dynamic is completely different in an hospital setting than it is at home, and furthermore, the fear and tension can also be greatly reduced in both settings by the services of a doula, freeing the husband to have a more active role, with less anxiety.
