How would you feel if you had instruction, in concrete terms, on exactly what to look for — and the techniques use — so that your drawing’s eyes convey that almost magical intensity that grips the viewer’s gaze and engages them with your drawing?

“During my first portrait class, we drew circles. Mr. Tank explained that we would start with the basics—working on a consistent pencil stroke and proper shading. Being a 14-year-old in a class with far more experienced adults, the first month of classes was extremely intimidating. But, in that time span, Mr. Tank help...ed me grow more as an artist than I would have ever been able to within my school’s art program.
"I took seven months to finish my first portrait, which may seem like an extremely long time. Mr. Tank encourages his students to strive for the precise details and intricate features that make the difference between the resemblance of a person and the portrait of a person. He realizes that his students each have their own working pace, and encourages them until they feel happy with their piece. He has honed his unique pencil stroke to the point that students at any level can understand, and even still add their own personal flair. He encourages us to try certain techniques on our portraits—but they are suggestions, not instructions. While Mr. Tank has taught his students all the same stroke, he pushes for our individuality to come out in our portraits.
"In addition to the overall improvement of my artwork, Mr. Tank’s class has also provided a truly enjoyable environment for me to spend two hours a week. As I have gotten to know him, my respect for him has grown immensely. Mr. Tank is not only an exceptional artist, but a sincerely good person. He goes out of his way to get to know his students as people, which adds an extremely warm, welcoming facet to the class. Mr. Tank’s exceptional artistic ability and genuine passion for teaching make for a truly engaging environment in which to learn."

“Taking a series of Darrel’s portrait classes is like spending a year in art school and a week laughing with friends. I learned how to loosen up and “see” my subject and to truly appreciate pencil as a medium. Darrel was eager to share invaluable information on lighting, depth and technique. The joy of completing my fi...rst portrait was exhilarating and only got better with each ensuing success. My choice of subject was entirely personal: whether my children, grandchildren or my loyal little dog. Doing their portraits was a blessing; it once again allowed me to spend precious time with those dear to me."
