David Willson Design and Illustration While the advertising community debates over the job title and description of brand manager vs brand editor, I've come to the conclusion that brand marketing itself is becoming less and less pertinent. Rather than focusing on spinning the brand and trying to mold customers perceptions of an artificial concept, business...es should focus on engaging, enabling and empowering their customers.

David Willson Design and Illustration I had lunch today with Richard Earl, the grandson of automotive genius Harley Earl. We talked about the sad state of GM. Richard believes that the company started going down hill the day it began scuttling Earl's customer-oriented design and manufacturing philosophy shortly after his retirement. I tend to agree with hi...m.

Richard was an important source for a feature article I wrote when I was editor-in-chief of ValueRich magazine about Harley Earl and how he almost single-handedly was responsible for transforming GM from a second tier automobile manufacturer into an overwhelming world powerhouse. David Willson Design and Illustration Art, old and new, from the slightly subversive, somewhat lurid sketchbooks of David Willson. Some of this stuff dates back to the 70's, which explains a lot.

David Willson Design and Illustration A reminder: I do logos. I believe that, as an illustrator, I have an advantage when designing logos. I tap my brain rather than stock art Web sites for imagery. Design sketches are approach the same as fine art, with a strong sense of positive/negative spatial relationships, compositional balance and color theory. A lo...go must be dramatically evocative, different and memorable. Take a look at these samples from over the years.

David Willson Design and Illustration It's hard to believe we've been living with the Wall Street meltdown for two years, but this cartoon proves it. I illustrated it in September 2007 for ValueRich magazine a small-cap publication I was editor in chief of at the time.

David Willson Design and Illustration Kayla and I went to see 9 yesterday. She loved it and I liked it well enough, but could not help feeling a little bit underwhelmed by it all. It had great animation and lots of action, but what movie doesn't these days. The main characters had depth and were certainly very creatively designed, but how much empathy can you feel for a walking burlap sack?

I had the same reaction. Technically amazing and well done. I could admire it as a piece of work, but not enjoy it as a movie, because the plot was so predictable and used so many elements that have been way overused in other films.

Tim Burton is given top billing as the producer in the marketing campaign, but in the credits he's one of five. Danny Elfman wrote "themes" not the score (which was applied rather unevenly to the action, especially in the beginning scenes). This is a first feature for Director/Writer Shane Acker. It all makes perfect sense after seeing the film. Still, the animation makes it worth going to see, except that "9" also refers to the price of tickets in our home town theater.

I'm a boomer. I got my first record album as a dance contest prize at Cotillion. If you're not a boomer you probably don't know what Cotillion was, it was several weeks of dance lessons culminating with a fancy dress ball ... for 12-year-olds. Actually, it was a pretty good night...

Why not have a Beatles party and get 10 friends to chip in $25 each. Throw in a set of MP3's to sweeten the deal and I'd do it in a second. I'm all for copyright, but as I see it, Sony owes me after that crappy Vaio computer they sold me and Michael Jackson no longer needs the money. LOL

David Willson Design and Illustration Cover art for the Burt Reynolds Jupiter Theatre. Watercolor illustration by David Willson.

Working with Peggy Kirton of Great American Marketing, I did the marketing graphics, display and program guide work for the theater from sometime in 1986 until Burt closed it. Later, I did design work for the subsequent operator, ...Richard Akins, who also continued to use this cover.

The cover was designed as a full color wrap for black and white interior pages, and was used for eight years.
