Catherine Millick Burnham

Catherine Millick Burnham My freshman daughter's only means of transportation, her bicycle, was stolen from the racks at Emerson (Cuarto) sometime between midnight Friday and 9 am Saturday, despite a heavy u-lock and a long cable lock. Both were cut clean through. It really seems to me as a parent that there need to be security cameras aimed ...at these outside areas where the campus is encouraging students to leave their bicycles. Had I known just how bad the bike theft problem is, I would have insisted that she keep her bike in her dorm.

Sorry to hear about this unfortunate incident. Thank you for sharing. My son is home for the holidays. He left his bike (locked) in Thoreau, Cuarto. I hope you don't mind me asking, was you daughter's bike brand new? A family friend's brand new bike was also stolen in campus at SJ State.

I'm really sorry to hear that. In all likelihood it was probably targeted for its value. I graduated in '07 and had a few friends who had their bikes stolen, too, throughout my 4 years - because they were name brand, higher-end models. However, I would suggest that you submit a police report with the Davis PD - there have been cases where the ... See Morethief attempts to sell the item on eBay/online and the police have successfully intercepted the sale - in which case the serial number hard-printed to the bottom of the bike's frame can be a key for matching (this is really the only intrinsic value for the bike license). My friends ultimately ended up buying very low-end bikes and their bikes were not touched (they were sporting Hummer, etc. brand names before).

If your daughter acquires another bike, be sure to remind her to take away the seat (if it's one of those nicer ones) because those have been known to be stolen - simply because they're so easy to remove and there's no way to secure them. I had mine stolen in my senior year. I am very sorry to hear about it though(esp in the midst of finals/finals prep). Try not to let it dampen the holiday cheer!

Arnel 'Direk' Francisco

Arnel 'Direk' Francisco We got strong winds & heavy rain at UCD today. Since we live 25 minutes from campus, I decided to give our freshman daughter a ride to her early morning class.
Now they got power outage & I heard they were dismissed early.
Drove around campus & saw some maintenance crews clearing fallen
branches & saw a few cops doing ...the rounds. Not many bikers today,
mostly students walking to class. Looks like UC Davis got everything
under control.

Welcome. Today's a lot better. Yes,it's the season when hooded sweaters/jackets come in handy. Also gave her a piece of rag w/c she carries in her backpack so she can wipe her bike seat whenever it rains.

Hi Tanna, we are taking my neice up next weekend to get settled into her dorm. From what I hear, there aren't any stores really close to campus like Walmart or Target, but if you have a car I don't think it's too far. I've never been there so I'll be exploring too. If you or your son need a ride to pick something up next weekend let me know, I'm sure we'll be going to pick up stuff for her room.
