This piece came in a few months back, and is certainly educational for those who aren't aware, and for those who think they can get a "deal" on something that is clearly a fake.
This is a brand new Chinese forgery of a Gibson Les Paul Standard. The guy brought it in because it played like $#!+, and he wanted to use it ...on the road in place of a real Gibson. He'd had a vintage piece stolen, and thought this would be a "cheap" alternative.
The guitar looked really nice at a glance, and came with a groovy case - all shipped directly from China, for under $200.
Now - this thing had some serious issues - the fretboard did a wicked ski-slope kinda thing at the neck joint, which prevented it from playing cleanly at any reasonable action.
I did the initial setup - then did some fretwork - but the customer wasn't satisfied... he wanted it to play as cleanly as possible, and he didn't care how much fret had to come off to do it.... then the fret level... and he hated the pickups... so I sold him a real Gibson 498T, and installed it...
When it was all said and done, he was in for a good chunk of change for my work. And this didn't even address the issues of the lousy hardware on the guitar. Was it worth it? I'll let you decide for yourself.
Oh, and if you don't know what a REAL Gibson entails, pay attention to the pics, as I'll be pointing out the most obvious differences between real and fake.

Wrightfield Guitar Salvage and Repair phew. T-40 finally finished, and ROCKS. Electronics work is piling up around me, but I'm getting some of these 'bottom-of-the-pile' jobs done and out of my hair. watch for the T-40 pictorial, and also a sweeeeet vintage bird coming soon!

For the curious - a brand new Gibson Les Paul Studio came in for some upgrades, and we get a look at the new circuit-board mounted controls and pickup connectors. I've had a couple arguments about this whole setup with people - high-tech versus keeping everything classic. Personally, I think it's the 21st century and t...hat it's about time we see modern connectors on pickup harnesses. Sure, it puts me out of work on a pickup swap, but it just makes SENSE.
It does have it's drawbacks. Should someone decide they'd like to swap out the potentiometers for different values, or a push-pull setup for coil tapping or something, it's gonna be a pain in the ass. That's where *I* come in handy!

Wrightfield Guitar Salvage and Repair Can't believe I didn't post this here yet: The newly re-designed Twister Amps website!

Jade has been hard at work on a handful of new projects, including the MEAN 100, Project: Xenia, and an entire new line of heads.

Wrightfield Guitar Salvage and Repair This is RIDICULOUSLY cool, even if the little amp sounds like crap. Don't be fooled by the thumbnail either, it's actually pretty big!

A confusing and nearly unbelievable story...

notice the press photos look markedly different from the production line photos below... I'm afraid to ask what is going on here - perhaps the set-neck version is going to cost REAL $$$ !? Talk about a lead balloon....

Mr. Webster has big problems. His biggest: He rocks too F'N hard! He's got some major divot-try going on here with his frets (good thing they're jumbo) and has managed to shear off a couple of his control pots.
So he's gonna need some new components, and a full-on fret-level to get this thing properly running again!
The... Strat is a kit-body with a remarkable Mexican neck - in that it has a stock bone-nut, and the old-timey logo with the serial number nicely placed on the back of the headstock. The body looks to be Swamp Ash, with the sweet Robin's Egg blue finish covering an older coat of gawwdawwful Puce. I gotta be honest and say I'm totally jealous of this color - just too damn cool!

This instrument came in for a fret-level and setup, but seeing what had been done to the headstock I knew I could do a bit better...
well, we had some good times and bad - we made some new friends and even learned a thing or two along the way!
...wait, no, that's the afterschool special I starred in -
actually with thi...s, the fretwork was a snap, and the headstock refinish work was done with a few rattle-cans of nitrocellulose lacquer. The end result was as good as I'd hoped!

Jaguars and Jazzmasters have been on my mind and on my bench more frequently than I ever expected... and those 'J's seem to have perennial bridge problems, Whizzo Buzzstop or no. One solution is to use a Mustang bridge, which is bizarre since the Mustang was a much more budget instrument - funny they would do that one... RIGHT.
Another solution is a bit expensive, but TOO cool. I just can't resist high-tech:

Ryan France and I are cut from the same cloth - he likes "relics", does graphic design, and isn't afraid to strip the purple metal-flake off a new Mascis Jazzmaster for the sake of a little Frankensteinyish-ing...
He'd already done all the sweet relic work, but was VERY unhappy with the stock single-coil pickups. Typica...lly I would recommend swapping out the stock 1 meg volume potentiometers for something a bit darker, a 250k or 500k... but Ryans gripe went beyond the guitar being a bit "shrill". He was sick of the all the noise too! ('...you know how to make those P90s sound good? Don't stop playing.')
So, the task at hand:
Replace the stock single-coil pickups with humbuckers.
The challenge? Keep it looking stock.
Can it be done? Hehe - those pickup covers look JUST big enough to sneak something under there....

Wrightfield Guitar Salvage and Repair Not sure how I feel about these... kinda stoked to see the 'carved-top' SG for a reasonable price, but wondering how good a birch plywood body will sound... plus the goofy look... The black & white one ain't too bad I s'pose. I suspect this will be one of those models that is universally hated until they're a few year...s out, and scarce, and then there will be some kooky price run-up on the things... ala Silverbursts.
