DeKalb Choral Guild
The DeKalb Choral Guild is proud to announce a new choral event for the Georgia music scene, the Georgia Young Composers Festival. The festival will recognize the wealth of musical talent among Georgia's high school and college students and introduce you to tomorrow’s big names today!

Last fall, the Guild invited studen...t composers from high schools and colleges across the state to submit original works for judging. During the winter, a selection committee winnowed the compositions down to five finalists representing the best of the state. The Guild will premiere the finalist's works in concert and give you a chance to meet these amazing musicians. At the concert, a Judges Panel will select the best high school and collegiate works and award a $1,000 scholarship to each winner. Feel free to join the cheering section for your favorite student.

The works the students have produced are remarkable in their diversity of subjects, styles and structures. One student chose to set an ancient Latin hymn in a “neo-Renaissance” style, while another chose a different ancient hymn and set it in a modern style. Another chose to intertwine a Robert Louis Stevenson poem with text from the requiem mass. And, we have two very different treatments of a poem by Edgar Allan Poe. Adding to the excitement of the evening, the Guild will perform Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms” with organ, harp and percussion accompaniment. Bernstein was often considered ahead of his time as a young composer, providing a perfect pairing for the works by our talented student composers.

The concert takes place in the Kopleff Recital Hall on the campus of Georgia State University. The hall is located at the corner of Gilmer St. and Peachtree Center Ave. in downtown Atlanta. Free parking is available in the “I” parking lot on Peachtree Center Ave. under the Sciences Annex Building. Overflow parking is also available for a fee in lots on surrounding streets. The Kopleff Hall is in the Arts and Sciences Building with the entrance on Gilmer Street.

Tickets are available for on-line purchase at the Guild's website: www.dekalbchoralguild.org. Tickets are $15, with a special rate of $5 for students and seniors.

Songs of faith, hope and deliverance took on a new depth of meaning for a people struggling to gain equality in society and deliverance from prejudice and oppression....

The featured work for the concert is Robert Ray's "Gospel Mass", a setting of the traditional mass elements with music in an African-American gospel style. The traditional chorus and piano accompaniment is enhanced with the addition of bass guitar and drum set.

The concert also features:
Rollo Dilworth's stirring arrangement of "Marchin' To Freedom"
Alice Parker and Robert Shaw's chilling arrangement of "Sometimes I Feel"
Moses Hogan's "Great Day"
André Thomas's "Keep Your Lamps!"

Tickets for the concert are $15 for adults, $5 for students and seniors.
