Dean Fortin First day at UBCM in Vancouver is now over. Great chance to connect with Stockwell Day, as well as many MLAs and mayors. The Chinese Consolate Reception for the PRC 60th aniversary was a full house. Tomorrow begins with the Urban City forum, where i will be presenting on youth civic engagement with Cathy McGreggor and Katie Shaw

Dean Fortin What are you doing on a rainy evening? Obviously I am reading your comments on FB right now. By the way if you feel like reading something, here is one option for you: my new speeches LOL - inside Chinatown and Humboldt Groundbreaking Ceremony.

Dean Fortin JBS consultation is in full swing. Yesterday was a visit to BC Transit, who were relieved that we were not going to shut the Bridge for 18 months to traffic (one of the concequences of going the refurbushing route). I guess the Esquimalt run is one of the top 3 busiest buses.

It was an honour to attend the Shon Yee anniversary celebrations and bring greetings on behalf of Mayor and Council and the citizens of Victoria. The Chinese associations were formed to assist immigrants as they came to Canada, seeking new opportunities and to help build the railroad and to be labourers in colonial t...imes. They were subject to deep racism and hardship - it is said that for every mile of track, there is a deceased Chinese person. They were subject to a head tax, not allowed to vote, or bring in family, or go to public schools. Only after the second world war did things start to change. Part of attending celebrations is to stand with our immigrant communities, to honour their contributions to building this city, and province and country, and to say to "never again" to second class citizenship.

They have them in Europe. Congradulatins Victoria for taking the lead. Small rural towns in Saskatchewan had public "Restrooms" for traveller and farmer that came to town or pass through, many roas the rails a bit more elaborate but served a public need till the mid 60s.

A replacement bridge will increase accessibility for all commuters making it easier and safer to cycle, walk and ride to downtown and will be designed to fit the form and character of British Columbia’s picturesque Capital City.
