ENA (Emergency Nurses Association) Violence against ED nurses isn't just a US problem. A Canadian nurses union says that violence against their members is increasing. Since Canada has universal access to health care, does that mean health care reform in the U.S. would have no effect on the levels of violence ED nurses experience? http://www.winnipegfree...press.com/local/violence-against-nurses-increasing-union-78948137.html

I just finished reading this and am baffled at how he got off. When I was in Vegas a pt bit me and I pressed charges, went to court, didn't have to testify because he got a plea for 2 years time. This was 2005. I HAVE DECIDED TO NO LONGER TAKE THE SHIT THESE UNGRATEFUL ASSHOLES DISH OUT. I will file charges each and EVERYTIME the screw with me. Is ... See Moreit worth it??? It is to me. I can't tell you how much abuse I have endured over the last 35 years and though nothing will come of it...I will make it hell for them as long as I can.......HAPPY HOLIDAYS LOL

As an RN who practiced for 43 years we need to continue adding more nurses but still make sure we're appropriately screening them. Patients are presenting with more complex problems and requiring a lot more interventions in the ER. It's not like they're just seen and then admitted. Now they may require lengthy tests and several hours of things like
IV therapy before discharge. You need staff for that.

Our area was not hard hit. The usual flu season is far worse than this. The hype and anxiety in the patients were the worst part. Forcing the issue and having heightened awareness of respiratory spread of illness was great serendipity.

I agree, We also did well. It was harder to deal with patients being miss led by the press. They can screw up most anything. Reminded me of the "MRSA out break" All they focused on were the deaths, never giving all the details such as thoes at greatest risk were thoes immune compromised

ENA (Emergency Nurses Association) Massachusetts ended ED diversion about a year ago. According to the data, wait times stayed about the same because hospitals were forced to find new ways to handle over crowding. Do you think this is a good idea for your state? I usually am the one that takes them down , the cop or guard is sitting on his ass watching the show. I know not everyone is like that but it happens too often. When I worked in Albuquerque 3 gaurds brought a guy in who was kicking and punching at 4 of my nurses. They just stood there. I told them if they did not taze this guy I would file a complaint. then they reluctantly took control.

I for one have a family to protect, If i am ever attacked, waiting for the geodon and ativan might be too late. In other words, don't we as healthcare workers have the right to defend ourselves? I won't go into details, but use your imagination. I don't advocate violence if it can be avoided, but i am also not going to let some punk or psycho try to hurt me without defending myself.

CPEN is good but does not make up for years of experience as this only looks at book smarts not the real world of patient care. I support the CPEN for those who are experienced peds ED nurses to compliment what they already have and do.

HIPPA is out of control. How do we safely care for patients, review their care with staff and share the information with those who need to know when everyone is afraid to talk? It was a great idea to start with, but it now interfers with care and training.
