I just finished the book. I think you convey the comedy, tragedy and irony of situations better than anyone I've read. What an amazing story. I'm glad you lived to write about it.

read your story on HuffPost. Tough break. I'm an online producer (journalstar.com) and I know how you feel about shareholder value. We're figuring out how to do the best with limited resources, so "how can we monetize this audience" gets brought up once in a while (mostly looking for ideas we can live with before the advertising people come up with ideas that we can't). Most days, I just report the news, and it's local stuff, not national ground-breaking stuff, but it's stuff that's important to Lincoln, NE. But I worked in Advertising for a while, and I don't mind finding ways to make money for the company. I own stock in the corporation that owns us and wouldn't mind seeing that stock price go back up.

I still can't believe they fired your ass. If they perceived a slight conflict of interest in writing for the HuffPo blog, that's somewhat understandable; putting your head on the chopping block for it, though? A bit much. Discussion? Yes. Disciplinary action? Maybe. Dismissal? ("Words that begin with the letter D" for one thousand, Alex.) Hellfuckingno. I bet Jonathan Klein was just worried about scary things like "personal opinion" and "actual human thought" destroying the reputation that he thinks CNN has, described by him as the "aggressively independent brokers of information." ("A feminine hygiene product, also known as the president of CNN"...do de do do do de do...)
