DogPsyche UK Here's a terrific article and short video on teaching a 'Look at Me' command (I call it the 'Watch Me'). Note that the timing must be really sharp for success (not an exercise to do first thing in the morning when you're less than awake!!).

Attention is the cornerstone to positive dog training. Training a dog to respond to his name by looking at you is the first step to success.

DogPsyche UK Just prepping to go work with a puppy called 'Oxo' - how brill is that for a name?!! (Yes yes.. will TRY to remember to get a photo...)

DogPsyche UK A really good website for understanding the relationship between dogs & children. The video clips demonstrate what I have been trying to tell dog owners and parents for years (they can only be viewed in internet explorer).

Notice that in each photo, the whites of the dog's eyes are clearly visible and the dog's mouth is closed. These indicate that the dog is feeling a lot of tension. Although the children are trying to be gentle and loving, the dogs are very uncomfortable with these interactions.

DogPsyche UK A very good article on how parents can get it so wrong (the photo below puts chills down my spine in horror...)

DogPsyche UK What a refreshing point of view... Simply 'be' with your dog. How many people work SO HARD at doing the right thing when all the dog wants is to just do things at their own pace? Another saying that comes to mind is 'laid back owners have laid back dogs'...

DogPsyche UK ... Digging a Great Big Hole! (and no the video hasn't been sped up!)

DogPsyche UK I've been asked a few times whether I'm going out to a fireworks display on Thursday or at the weekend. The answer is 'no'. We have dogs at home and they may need to see we're not bothered by the fireworks. Sometimes having a dog means sacrificing things. There are a lot of people out there that don't get that...

DogPsyche UK This has made me so happy today... At last a definitive step in the right direction for pedigree dogs.

Puppies should be sold with a full family medical history to alert new owners to the risk of genetic disorders, an inquiry will recommend today.

DogPsyche UK The Companion Animal Behaviour Therapy Study Group's new website is great. I've found membership invaluable for behaviour research. They also have a very good Study Day every year. Next year it is on 7th April in Birmingham - well worth a trip if you are studying companion animal behaviour.

DogPsyche UK Possibly the most eloquent, decisive report on the negative effects of electric shock collars that I've ever read...
