This is a link to an interview I did with Mark Kelley on his prime time CBC show about the pitfalls that lottery winners and others who receive big money have to deal with.

Great interview, Don.
I am also impressed and surprised that Canadians skipped over NYC and LA for good advice about money, even though they are more likely to get that good advice here.

I mean, look at Timothy Geitner!

Congratulations on getting some well-deserved national media exposure, albeit in Canada! Lou Dobbs is gone; I vote for you to take his place!

Good interview. How about a book about those who won and kept it all? Are they in the money, but without family & friends?

Don McNay, Author & Syndicated Columnist My first time on a national network broadcast. Granted it is a different country's network, but I am still excited. Mark Kelley interviewed me earlier about lottery winners and it will run between 7 pm and 9 pm tonight (Friday) on the Canadian Broadcasting network. It looks like it has plenty of podcast and internet reruns as well.

They mooch off their parents well into their "adulthood." They frequently need to "borrow" money, with no intention of paying it back. They always have car problems, relationship problems, "bad luck" or other sob stories.

Don, What you wrote about contributed to the biggest problem I ever had at mediations: adult children, usually baby boomers, trying to affect the outcome of the settlement for their elderly parent's/parents', even though the claimants were represented by counsel. My gut feeling after a while was that these children did not share in the prosperity... Read More normally associated with the baby boom and that they were hoping the parents would reward them right after settlement, or, at worst, with a gift from the hereafter. It was only because the mediator, plaintiff's counsel, and the elderly claimants themselves ganged up on these adult children that I've never had a plaintiff over the age of 65 take a case to trial.

Tom,
That is a great point. I've seen the same thing over and over again at mediations and settlements too. Thanks for sharing as it gives me something to think about on future columns.

I'm convinced that most of the mistakes made handling money result from lack of information and bad habits formed in childhood.

It could be that President Obama is a small town guy after all. His early adulthood on the south side of Chicago is where he found a "small town" environment that embraced him.

Jeff,
I never knew he was your uncle. I read a couple of his books (NIght Comes to the Cumberlands was a book we studied in one of my political science classes) and got to meet him once. He was close to my friend Al Smith and Al was telling a Harry Caudill story to a group of us at dinner last month.

I never met him...wish I had. But I sure enjoy his books. The only other Caudill he wrote about was Cro Caudill - who had just one arm and was a local level politician. Cro apparently had some one-winged wooden Crows carved that he handed out to prospective voters. I've searched ebay and the internet numerous times hoping to find one.

I've watched many people get in trouble with upside down car loans, second mortgages or high interest rate financing. Credit keeps many people from living within their means. Then a friend told me he was buying a large house.

That's cool. I'd take my chances with sudden wealth. Had a time to consider it in 2006 when I had a deal to sell my publications to Westlaw. Fell through at the very end. Which is okay because we've earned as much as we would sold it for at the time since then. But I did have to work.
