Thanks for the comment Thomas!

I think your question is best put “why should I pay for something that I am not going to use?”

First let me say I sympathize with you, as I won’t be attending the Olympics either, and like you, pay a very healthy amount of taxes. However I think it’s important that provincial and federal governments make investments in areas that provide net benefits to the province or country as a whole. I think the Olympics will provide a net benefit to BC, but perhaps not a net benefit to Northern BC. However, the container port in Prince Rupert will provide a net benefit to BC and definitely the Northwest, but less likely to directly benefit someone in Vancouver.... Read More

I guess to summarize, you’re probably not alone in thinking the Olympics is largely about the lower mainland, but the truth is we need to support Vancouver/Whistler’s Olympics, just as we would want them to support our NTL, energy corridor, and container port. That’s what makes us a province and a country; not just a bunch of city/states.

Now I can only hope some of the goodwill generated by the Olympics rubs off and instills a more positive attitude in our local MLA and MP. Maybe then they’ll start looking for solutions to our current challenges, instead of playing the political blame game.

Thousands of jobs? Aren't those jobs just temporary, and then it ultimately only supplies 20-30 jobs in the end? Or was that a different project I'm thinking of?

I think you're figures are off but that isn't the point. Since we were born Darren how many new jobs have been created in Kitimat?

zero

And now that there are billions of dollars in potential investment and many new jobs at our door step, we receive nothing but negativity and barriers to success from our local provincial and federal representatives. It's just really sad :(

Thanks for responding, Donny. I wasn't sure on the figure, I just dislike bold claims of "THOUSANDS OF JOBS CREATED" when it's entirely misleading. However, I know you love clever wording like that, so I'm sure you're quite content.

From what I've researched, the environmental risk of this project far outweighs any benefit from temporary job creation. But I'm sure you could have assumed that I'd see it that way.

But when the Olympic flame finally touched down on Canadian soil and the host First Nations people canoed it across the Inner Harbour, all you could hear were cheers.

After watching the Liberals' carbon tax turn into a chunk of NDP kryptonite during the last election, I thought Carole James was smart to cut her losses and drop her opposition to a tax that divided her own party.

Sameer nailed it. Let's not forget that the Income Tax threshold was raised to $11 000 from ~$9300. Hopefully by the time 2013 comes around, people will see that the HST was actually good policy. Sometimes the right decision isn't the most popular.

Donny van Dyk The reduction of royalties on natural gas production is another good policy decision by the BC Liberal Government. Competition for global capital has never been so intense and policies such as this and the HST, make BC more attractive for investors. New investment leads to a stronger BC and of course, new jobs!

CALGARY -- British Columbia fired the latest round Thursday in the North American battle to woo natural gas producers, unveiling miniscule royalty rates and millions of dollars in fresh infrastructure incentives in a move that may force neighbouring Alberta to respond to in kind.

"Today the issue is markets, tomorrow it is are we competitive and when markets turn are we able to capture the rebound?" he said. "To do that we need to ensure we are reducing costs where we can, so this is a step in the right direction."
