The first Womens Olympic Marathon saw a courageous move by young Joan Benoit of the Unites States. A few months removed from surgery she dared the field (and herself) to follow an early blistering pace. 1984 LA Olympics. Epic.

I missed my moring run the day of her LA Gold. My plan was to catch the start, sneak away for five miles, and then catch the meat of the race after I got back.

But, Joanie bolts at 5K and I can't leave the TV!

During that race, the TV coverage went to commercial and when they came back, she was 100m ahead and never looked back. The home viewers did not get to see her big move.

Down the Backstretch presents the Marathon Week Facebook Film Festival. Today's feature highlights one of the most famous moments in Minnesota marathon history. Wayzata native Dick Beardsley and Alberto Salazar go over the edge at the 1982 Boston Marathon. We debated whether to use this one, because the video quality is so poor, but there are a lot of things to love about this clip.

Things to love:
1) Excellent background music.
2) Coach Bill Squires unable to contain himself in the broadcast booth.
3) It seems that in 1982, anyone could just hop on their bike and ride on the course, right behind the leaders, even into the final mile.
4) Dickie gives it one last try on the final corner.

The Boston 2009:
1) The finish is a bit different the last few blocks.
2) The crowds (though still as large and drunk) are behind barriers are LOUD.
3) Nothing you watch, read about or remember concerning the Boston Marathon match actually experiencing it in person.
4) WATTA--WATTA--WATTA! means water in a Boston accent.

Here's the set-up: Larry "Rain" Murphy is doing life in Folsom Prison for murder. Every spare minute, he runs laps around the prison yard. A prison official notices that he has real talent and brings in a local college coach to develop Murphy's running.

When Murphy can't get a furlough to run in a sanctioned meet, the prisoners build a track in ... Read Morethe exercise yard. A race is held with runners from the outside, and Murphy qualifies for the Olympic Trials. But the "OAU" denies his entry into the meet.

In this scene, Murphy is back to running laps around the yard when he hears the mile results from the Trials.
