Deaf veterinarians pave their own way - "A common misperception is that deaf people are lazy when they are not good at reading lips & facial expressions. 'It becomes easy for most hearing people to forget that for a deaf person, it can be difficult to communicate with just about every person they meet every day,' Dr. D...odge said. 'Many times, deaf people are just brushed off with an oversimplified explanation or 'it doesn't matter.'' This can cause frustration, she said, because it creates anxiety that another situation will come up in which the deaf person is either going to be shunted off to the side or have to make decisions on the basis of inadequate information. Simply making more of an effort to communicate is greatly appreciated." http://www.avma.org/onlnews/javma/nov09/091115e.aspRead More

The nervous Corgi dug its nails into the metal examination table as Dr. Thomas McDavitt held the tan-and-white dog in place. The patient began to relax as the veterinarian listened for a heartbeat. But instead of using a stethoscope, he felt the dog's side with his cheek. ...

Just yesterday, I experienced two very different styles of interpretor for a deaf young man. One was willing to give me signs as I tried to remember my ASL 101 lessons from 2005. The second one was more of a strict "this is what she said" interpretor, not as willing to help me fill in the signs I was missing and preferring instead to sign for me.

... Read MoreI'd be interested in hearing from the D/deaf community about how they prefer their interpretors to handle casual (non-business, non-medical, etc) communications?

NOT ANOTHER ONE! Two weeks after a group of Deaf actors protested the choice of a hearing actor for a Deaf role in an upcoming Off Broadway production, the issue has surfaced again: Should producers have chosen a Deaf or Blind child actress to play Helen Keller in this winter’s Broadway revival of “The Miracle Worker”...?
The producers announced on Wednesday that Abigail Breslin, would play Helen in the production, which is set to open this winter. Ms. Breslin can see and hear. http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/29/advocacy-group-opposes-miracle-worker-casting-choice/

We couldn't agree more Nathaniel. The whole situation makes us cringe as well. It is a civil rights issue when a minority sub-culture is being overlooked for a job when a qualified candidate from that group could be found. It is without conscience that there was never even a thought to look for a Deaf or Blind actress for the role. And we are ... Read Moredeeply saddened by the negative backlash to Deaf and Blind advocacy groups from hearing/seeing people who do not even understand why it's such a big deal! Where would Women, African-Americans, Latinos and all other minority sub-cultures be today if they did not fight for their rights? Nowhere! We pray that theater groups like NTD, Deaf West Theatre, and Blind theaters help find some great young Deaf and/or Blind actresses to audition for the understudy role. Even if she is not the main lead, it could be a great opportunity to shine and prove that Deaf and Blind actresses can bring a greater authenticity, emotion and realism to Helen Keller!

There should be a protest or something to get these producers to realize they made a terrible mistake. If i was in their position and it was me in the productiion side of this I would be audtioning deaf and blind actresses until there is one that fits the role.

We proudly support Dogs for the Deaf (DFD)! Rescuing homeless dogs and professionally training them to enhance lives is what Dogs for the Deaf is all about. In over 30 years, Dogs for the Deaf has rescued and placed over 3,000 dogs in homes as Hearing Dogs, Miracle Mutts (Special Dogs for Special People), Harmony's Hou...nds (Dogs with Special Needs), and Career Change Dogs. http://www.dogsforthedeaf.org/ Hearing Dogs are chosen from animal shelters. Many shelters must euthanize dogs if no homes are found for them. By using shelter dogs, DFD are able to help alleviate some of the unwanted dog population by rescuing these dogs. Once trained, they are placed in loving homes where they provide valuable and even life saving benefits.Read More
