Dr. William Kolbrener Did Tshuva work? The day after: anyone feel better?

Dr. William Kolbrener

Dr. William Kolbrener I had a friend in college who always wanted to get me to listen to a bootleg of Dylan - live at Royal Albert Hall - Was too busy with the Stones, etc, so I never did until years later when it was released... Shame the credits roll on this... But you do get the 'Judas' - sense of betrayl for Dylan going electric... Great moments in Rock n' Roll - shabbat shalom...

Dr. William Kolbrener Which is more deforming to the human personality - extreme poverty or wealth? I just came back from Mea Shearim - saw both, and it's a toss-up.

I have the feeling that its not the conditions but the spirit. poor moral education and lack of true ideals is the most destroying.

Dr. William Kolbrener Tshuva is the one mitzvah that has to be done l'shma. In all the others, we can falsify: use the outer shell of our actions, as way of impersonating who we want to become. But with tshuva, it's got to be real; it's got to be me.

Dr. William Kolbrener Are orthodox Jews fundamentalists? Did I ask that before? Did people answer?

Your response makes sense to the question as it was stated, though not what I was getting at. I was not trying to de-legitimize the resistance, but rather the causes of that resistance. Does that make sense?

Dr. William Kolbrener So here's the real burning question - how can House go on now that he has resolved his issues: is there life - art - without psychic tension?

Dr. William Kolbrener Lots of talk these days about authentic Torah, but more pressingly, do I have an authentic self? Can I find it in time for the holidays?

Rosh Hoshana is the anniversary of the creation of man. On the sixth day of the creation, man was inspirited by the divine, and given a soul: 'And the Lord G-d formed man of the dust of the ground, and ...

Dr. William Kolbrener Best way to get ready for RH - take a look at the central sections of Musaf - malchus, shofaros and zichronos. And even if you don't have the time now - don't despair. But don't miss the opportunity on the holiday itself. If you didn't think that prayer is a form of poetry, and Chazal (our sages) masters of that craft, this will be a chance to think again.

Dr. William Kolbrener On fear of God as the antidote for religion - my new post. So tell me did this turn out more Freudian or Jewish? Not sure my blog audience is used to this level of complexity; awaiting response from my 'fit audience though few' (we're at 51!) here...

The wife of a friend is in the shmattah business. She makes the shmattas; he collects the money, deposits it in the bank. One day recently, he took the profits - 800 Shekels - which unbeknownst to him, fell out of his pocket as he scootered from one end of town to the other. ...

I think I misrepresented Phillips - he's not giving a sense of the normative role of the analyst as passive mind reader and purveyor of psychic parlor tricks. My sense is from Future of an Illusion that Freud looked in the end at the religious impulse (for which he momentarily showed some sympathy in relation to his friend Rolland's experience of ... Read Morean 'oceanic feeling') as a desire to recapture some form of infantile union, a primitive non differentiated consciousness. But be interested to know more in how Freud may have sensed the difficult freedom (Levinas's term) in Judaism.

Dr. William Kolbrener Freud says that people are not bad, but fearful, and religion a function of that fear. Is it possible to be a religious Freudian? Desirable?

But I'm wondering, Shelly, about the experience of what Adam Phillips calls simply the secular. True there is z'man and mo'ed, but what about the structuring of personal history? the understanding of personal time? Is that preparation for the after life - the postponement of time, it might seem - a good thing? in good faith?

If one lives life as simply preparation for an after life, no, that is not a good thing, IMHO. I've always felt that the religious myth about the man who sits on a chair his whole life waiting for the Messiah is a horrible parable.
