The public is invited to a free reception celebrating new work by DAI member-artists in the Great Hall of the St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center, also known as the Depot on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 6:30 – 8 pm. In keeping with the democratic spirit of the Membership show, a $300 cash prize will be awarded to the “Peop...le’s Choice.” The work that receives the greatest number of votes by 7:15 pm will be announced before the close of the evening’s event.
The sum of the regional visual arts scene is once again brilliantly distilled into the DAI’s Annual Membership Exhibition. This eagerly anticipated show is the venue to see and appreciate new work created by perennial members of the DAI, along with new member-exhibitors. Each member of the Art Institute is invited to submit one new work of art for display.
“Even though the work is un-juried, this show is a testament to the incredible array and quality of visual art in the Arrowhead region,” said Samantha Gibb Roff, DAI executive director.
The DAI’s Annual meeting and election of new board members will take place from 6 – 6:30 pm, in the Great Hall – immediately preceding the Membership show reception. For more information, call 218-733-7560.

Gary Swanson is an artist from Solon Springs, WI who has devoted his life to elementary art education. He recently received his MFA from the University of Wisconsin Superior.
Swanson’s anthropomorphic assemblages evoke a surprisingly wide array of emotions: from detachment, loneliness, and despair to humor, love, and... caring. This installation of works will both entertain and confront the gallery visitor.
Artist Statement:
I have always been fascinated with the art of primitive cultures, and watching children create art for the past 28 years has certainly helped to shape my eye. “The Modern Primitive” is a cross-fertilization of materials in assemblage sculpture where I am exploring the commonalities and contrasts inherent in natural organic forms and discarded manufactured objects. This congregation of wall mounted figures reflect metaphors of antique tools and tinker toys: ancient artifacts and art movements, influenced from Primitivism, Early Modern and “Outsider Art.”

Artist Statement:
Printmaking usually serves as the best conduit for representing my ideas. I adore the fusion of hand-made and mechanical sensibilities this medium offers. Most importantly, reproduction imbues a picture with considerably more power than a single image. It’s this act of duplication that transforms an or...dinary image into an icon. Throughout history, powerful rulers and organizations have gained authority by propagating their iconography using many mediums- including coins, stamps, posters, flags, and photography. In the contemporary world, most of us recognize this power through corporate branding. The goal is one icon, immediately recognized by millions, trusted to represent a clear and consistent ideology.
Victory explores these grand narratives and the symbiotic relationship between American consumers and the War on Terror. As an artist and a veteran, I feel compelled to use my work to deconstruct the character of our imperialism. God blesses the United States for spreading freedom and peace around the world. If something goes wrong, it was surely an honest mistake. Technology will always be there to save us, there’s no problem that can’t be solved quickly by finding the right product, and anyone that doesn’t share our ideology is inherently flawed and must be fixed. Above all, a happy citizen is never denied the opportunity to be entertained. This is the natural and inevitable order of things. Nothing can stop the progress of our country because we expect miracles and, by George, we get them.

Combined Gallery Reception, Tuesday, October 6, 5-8 PM

Starting with this exhibition of Na...tive American Beadwork, the DAI will begin a new craft-based gallery initiative in collaboration with the St. Louis County Historical Society. This new program is designed to connect the region’s indigenous and traditional craft-intensive arts with new audiences via placement in the Historical Society’s Fesler Gallery on the main floor of the Depot. Placing contemporary craft intensive regional arts – including Native American art – in the Historical Society’s defined space will assist in drawing connections and showing how arts are an integral part of our culture. It will also showcase the strong tradition of craft in this area. The opportunity to collaborate with the St. Louis County Historical Society in terms of display space, research expertise and related artifacts will serve to increase audiences for both organizations and enhance the display through putting these art forms in historical context. Visitors to the Depot will benefit through the integration of art and history. Through didactic materials, visitors will be given a historical and social understanding of how these art forms evolved and developed in our region.
Marcie McIntire is an artist who creates traditional Ojibwa beadwork, appliqué, ribbon work, and clothing. Her work has been featured in regional craft exhibitions and in museum gallery settings. Kurt Buffalo is a young Ojibwa artist who focuses on the creation of jewelry using traditional beadwork. His work is well known to the craft fair circuit. This is one of the first opportunities for his to show his work in a gallery setting
