In my agent travels, I find that most of the questions I get from aspiring authors are about queries. And that makes sense: everyone (including myself) will tell you that your query is an important weapon in your agent-getting arsenal...

Thanks for the confidence boost! My query letter has evolved from formula-as-doctrine to formula-as-footprint. The next time I wonder if I've strayed or added too much of my own voice, I'll hear your words.

The Wall Street Journal on Friday the 6th reported that Borders was going to close 200 of its Waldenbooks stores. True these are mall stores only, but it seems to me it was only yesterday that the chains were springing up every where...

Jane:

I think this could happen, but the trend that would push it wouldn't be the closing of mall locations. Instead, it would be the revitalization of downtowns that I'm seeing here in New Jersey. These often include independent bookstores.

The independent bookseller in Westfield (the smalltown downtown closest to my home) moved and expanded a couple of years ago.... Read More

That being said, weren't the Walden stores those little ones that pretty much took up space between the big guys and the food courts?

Ah, NaNoWriMo. That time again already? For those not already in the know, that stands for National Novel Writing Month. Launched in California ten years ago, it’s essentially a communal writing experience. Over the course of one month (no more!), people are encouraged to write a 50K word novel. ...

This New York Times article on Glenn Beck as the Oprah of the thriller community could have larger implications for the publishing business if Beck's popularity stays at a high (though hardly anyone has the longevity of an Oprah)...

I like the idea that literature is a vehicle for exploring (and exploiting) our anxieties, both personal and cultural. I tend to agree with Cory Doctorow that science fiction has always been more about the present than the future. What do you all think? -Miriam

For the past several days I’ve been editing a fascinating proposal by one of my clients, an economist who specializes in analyzing global entrepreneurship. Despite working in the so-called “dismal science,” he makes an encouraging case that this is an era of singular opportunity. He w...

A word--via Big Think--from one of my favorite authors, John Irving, on the challenges of getting published today. Tempted to shoot yourself, John? Hyperbole much? In any case, writers, he feels your pain.-Chasya

What do you thing of forming new words? I received advice for and against including my "omnithestic" in my query letter. Of course, I have this vision of the word as integral to marketing one of my works...and it catches on...and serves as the basis of my Charlie Rose interview...Hey, it's a vision!
