Greg Adams Short Story part 8...Run back across the parking lot to our gig. Still pouring outside. Open the door, what the #%@!. This place is PACKED! I go the dressing room and see that most of the band has taken advantage of the liberties of free drinks. Nothing new here. Marc Russo on alto sax and Jerry Manuel on FOH seemed to... have invented a new game called Bobbing for Heinekens. Out of a 2 foot deep wash tub. Head first into ice water.
Okay, let's get to the show. This place is rocking. I sure hope nobody attacks Guam tonight, because this military audience in Aloha shirts is, well, three sheets to the wind!
The show goes great and near the end of the set, ninety minutes later...

Greg Adams Short Story part 7...I'm pretty sure I've walked into a Star Wars Cantina Strip Club with a hint of The World Of Suzie Wong. Yikes! I sit down at a table, and before I can light a cigarette, (yes, I smoked then). Here comes b-girl #1. "Hey Joe, buy me a drink?" I know where this going. We once pulled Rocco out of a bar... in the Reeperbahn in Frankfurt, Germany for being a "Joe" to the tune of about one $300 dollar glass of Champagne.
Must have been about ten girls who called me Joe in about 20 minutes.
Then the strip shows began. Oh Boy! Let me just say this place is not the Palomino in Vegas. That's all I'll say.
I think the cocktails actually helped with pain management on my wounds.
As I was waiting for my change on my tab, I noticed a curtain at the side of the stage that men were going in and coming out in high traffic, shall I say. Most likely alot of happy endings going on back there...

Greg Adams Short Story part 6...The Gig. The next day is even hotter than yesterday. Humid doesn't even come close to describe it. How about 95 and pouring rain. All day and night. I can't wear shoes because of my coral wounds on the tops of my feet. Wearing flip flops is the only way to go.
We are at soundcheck late afternoon and... boy is this place a dump. A nightclub open 24/7. I really think some the regulars actually live there. Mickey Rourke in "Barfly", anyone? At night though, it's pretty much off duty military.
After sound check, happy hour. I find out the club is a beer and wine place, but I'm told there is a cocktail lounge next door. Since we were planning to stay at the gig, I go over to have a pop or two at the lounge. Still raining, I dash from building go building. The rain hitting the tops of my feet is excruciating.
I open the door to the lounge...

Greg Adams Short Story part 4...By now I was the last guy in the water and the toxins were kicking in and I'm thinking about how what might be closing in behind me. Cue John Williams score from the aforementioned movie.
Anyway, I obviously made it back. But now I'm sick as a dog from the coral cuts.
Seriously, in and out of conscio...usness. And every time I'm up and about, the sight of seeing one of these guys slicing raw fish was enough to make you, well, you know. I was then told the thing I can do to help stem some of the infection was to, drumroll... pee on my wounds.
It really did help on the pain, too. But it took weeks for it to heal the infection. Nasty stuff, to say the least. Thank God it was a night off...

Greg Adams Short Story part 3...When our host and guide sais there was an easier way to exit the grotto, there was a silent yet collective desire to kill this guy.
Turns out it would put us right back in the lagoon without having to go back into the open sea AND 10 to 15 feet swimming under water. He strongly warned us about one t...hing to watch out for, although. Coral. Razor sharp. Especially the fire coral. It was the most toxic of all of them on this route. Of course, your truly slipped and fell... on the fire coral. Ripped up a knee and tops of both feet. Bleeding pretty bad!
Managed to get through and back into the lagoon. The other were ahead of me and all of a sudden, I thought, sharks. Sharks! They sense blood in the water. I saw the movie Jaws. Oh boy....

Greg Adams Short Story part 2...Most of us said yes. He dives off the side and yells back, "Follow me". The water was like glass and it seemed safe enough there was a possibility of sharks. Oh boy. We all jumped in and began to swim after him.
He was approaching the point of the lagoon and the open sea was looming more and more wi...th every stroke now. I'm an okay swimmer but I really do prefer to have a ladder and the option of a shallow end with "3 feet" painted nearby.
We round the point and are now in open sea. But he says only 20 more feet and we'll go into this grotto that is really unbelievable. What's really unbelievable is how we are going to get into this really unbelievable grotto. Like swimming underwater for 10 to 15 feet. Not so cool for this "okay" swimmer.
I made it and the grotto was pretty spectacular. Full of brilliantly colored tropical fish. What colors! We hung out in there for awhile. And then it was time to go back...

Greg Adams Short Story...Mid '80s on tour in Guam. A beautiful Island, but how in the hell did we ever end up playing a gig there? I remember Marc Russo was playing lead sax then and Lennie Lee Goldsmith was singing lead then.(More on them later).
I'm thinking that the U.S. military might have had something to do with us getting t...here, but it was the gig off base that was the "night to remember".
Arrived a couple of days earrly so as to acclimate. Somebody in the band knew somebody there who knew somebody... well, you get the point. That somebody had a 60 foot yacht and invited the band to go out for a ride along the coast on one of the days off. Great food, fresh ahi sashimi, beer and wine, etc.
We pulled into a small cove and dropped anchor. Then the owner asked if everybody could swim...
