On Mar 2, the Senate passed HR 4691 as a
Band-Aid fix to temporarily reverse the 21.2% Medicare cut, giving physicians a 30-day
reprieve until Mar 31 on the cut (a $23,000 loss to each MI
physician this year, according to the AMA).
It did not address the real problem: the flawed
sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula tha...t dictates physician
reimbursements. Until the SGR is repealed, physicians and their patients
will remain trapped in a cycle of progressively steeper cuts being
threatened and reversed, a cycle that has lasted for more than 10
years. If the cycle continues, seniors' access to health care will be
severely jeopardized.
