      • Mary Thompson-Lund Lesson Plans..............PLAN ON CHANGING THEM. Good luck to all those teachers pulling out the bells and whistles and the bag of tricks. It takes many things to hold a child's attention. Mostly, it takes a teacher that wants to listen.

Shriveled budgets have pushed government officials to make cuts so deep that the remaining teachers are digging deeper into their own pockets with hopes that their students won't feel the pinch.

      • Marianne Crawford Alan, some things can be deducted under business expenses if you run over the $250. I know I spend WAY too much and get back credit for only a portion of it. Still, it makes my life in the classroom easier when I have the things I need. And yes, I know, the more you do (and spend), the more it's expected. It needs to stop. What other professionals would be expected to provide their own fans, office supplies, furnishings and incentives for their workers?

      • Kathy Truax Fulcher One year we had to take a $5 collection per teacher to get soap, paper towels, dish soap, etc. just so we could wash our hand and dishes. You are right, that would not be expected from any other profession!

Ferris faculty will be in their classrooms and online with students Mon., Aug. 30, after they agreed on Sunday to continue bargaining with the university.   The faculty had set Sunday as the deadline to either engage in a legal job action or start classes the next day....

            • Jodi Estes Gabert Great Start Collaborative has been a great help in my campaign. Often they're connected with the county social services board. Where I am running,(102nd District) they've been very active in the primary. I had two forums (Wexford Missaukee and Mecosta Osceola) and they were excellent. I'm not going to make it to the Sandbox, but go by all means and take a big satchel. You'll get a great deal of information.

            • Kristen Famiano ROFL....wow! I felt that way when I worked for a newspaper in Port Huron. I found the majority to be dedicated and passionate...and some people just came in to do the bare minimum and get the part time college employees to do their jobs. Hmmm. I guess you find that anywhere.

            • Susan Walsh I haven't looked at the funding but I think the important thing here is not whether it goes to teachers or other support staff, but how this will affect the students. If it goes to teachers through hiring more teachers and that makes the class size smaller so that students get more attention, then it is a good thing. The bottom line is the students, not who gets the money.
