The EIFF's move to June was a decision considered by the Board over a long period of time, with a painstaking period of research and discussion underpinning it.
The overwhelming feedback we have had from Edinburgh people (who do represent the bulk of our public audience) is delight that they will no longer have to choose between August festivals, but will be able to experience to experience the Film Festival as a whole and in its own space. It opens up opportunities for the festival to grow and develop which simply weren’t there in August.
We hope you can make it!

The move to June was undertaken precisely to ensure the maximum benefit to the audience: it opens up opportunities for the festival to grow and develop which simply weren’t there in August.
I certainly don't find myself shamed in the slightest by the move, nor by the programme we have put together for the first June festival. I'm sorry that you won't attend to see it, and I wish you well. .

As for being a ‘trade show’: we are an audience festival, but we also cater to and work with the film industry, because film festivals are part of its operation. The films that we show belong to people, so we need to have a relationship with the people who own them. Our relationship to the industry is umbilical, absolutely necessary, and positive: it serves the creation of the best possible programme for the public and the best possible support for the films within it.
I do not understand what you can possibly mean by ‘cancelling all scope for students and the public to attend’. We certainly have not done this. Tickets will be on sale to everyone who wants them when the box office opens. Students were customarily away or working in August; they are one of the constituencies we are working to accommodate.
We work all year to make the best festival for our audience that we possibly can (continued...)

Thank you for your comment Mark O'Connell.

‘Getting A-list stars in the morning papers’ is not and has never been our aim. (Indeed, we usually find ourselves defending ourselves against the charge of not having enough.) We are and are funded to be a festival of discovery. Star presence can be great, but it is never what guides our programming, and I think even a cursory look at a recent programme would show this.
