Marietta The Arkansas schools are changing the birthday cutoff for kindergarten to August 15. My daughter's birthday is August 24. Does this matter when you homeschool your child?

Yes, because it changes the compulsory attendance age and everyone has to follow that. I believe this upcoming year will be September 1, but I will check on it and re-post the answer.

Rebecca I'm confused. The Education Alliance site says that grades 3-9 are required to take the Iowa Test. The Iowa Test web site says it only goes to grade 8. So what testing is required for 8th thru 12th graders that are homeschooled?

It is 3rd - 9th grade. The IOWA test for 9+ has different directions/setup than the 3-8 test... but I've given the tests to homeschoolers for the past four years and there *is* a ninth grade test. Don't know why their website would say otherwise. <shrug>

Kristina I am curious about something and trying to find the answer. Are homeschool students allowed to play sports or participate in band at local public schools if the school agree. I know that it is not a requirement for the school to allow this but if the school agrees are they allowed to. I know about the Tim Tebow bill... but that would have made it a requirement. I am wondering about now. IF it would be beneficial to go talk to the local school or not.

Kristina, I know this is not a very helpful answer, but the fact is, it's pretty much a local school board matter. The response a family gets to what you are asking tends to vary a great deal, depending on how that school's decision-makers view homeschoolers. I have known some who got to play sports or in a band in one school, others who were vehemently refused.

No, that answers my question exactly. I wasn't sure if they were even allowed to play or do band. My concern was more like for competition regulations and stuff. My may concern is actually band. I would like for my children to be in band and so would they.

Kristina, in Arkansas all extra-curricular activities are regulated by the Arkansas Activities Association. They do not allow member schools and students to participate with or against non-member schools and students. THerefore, you would be allowed to practice with the football team if you wish but you could not play in any of the games. We are working to get this changed, but it is a slow process.

Kristina Does the education Alliance know that the webstie is messed up? I can't read many of the articles because the link on the left hand side of the page are moved more towards the middle.

Hmmm...I checked it in both Internet Explorer and Firefox, and neither one seems to have a problem; it's possible that an older version of IE would have issues with the site, but I don't recall running into any problems when we used older versions in the past.

I'll keep trying to get to the bottom of this, and let you know if I find anything.

I use IE8 though. It's not an older version. On my end Firefox didn't have a problem in the blog area but IE8 does. I'll check on my other computers and see how they do and get back to you.
