Education World The NYT ran an article the other day called "Selling Lessons Online Raises Cash -- and Questions." How do you feel about teachers selling lesson plans and other teaching resources online? Who do you think owns those resources -- the teacher or the district that pays the teacher's salary?

A venture by some teachers has led school officials to ask who owns materials developed for public schools.

You are kidding, right? Why would anyone think that a teacher's original lesson plan is the property of some central office administration?

Education World I can't believe no one was insulted by Gov. Pawlenty's remarks! As a former teacher, I was. Do you agree that the brightest people don't choose teaching? If so, why not?

Linda...In response to your question of why I left teaching after 5 years, there are 4 reasons: 1. I discovered I liked kids more than I liked being a teacher. 2. I discovered that I disliked administrators far more than I liked teaching. 3. I discovered that society pays lip service to the important role that teachers play, but is not willing to ... Read Morepay them a decent wage. 4. I looked around the teacher's break room and saw too many people who were burned out, who hated kids or were simply counting the days until summer vacation. Here's the best part of the story...I had to take a $5,000 pay cut to get OUT of teaching, because my prospective employer told me that "teachers can't DO anything, so I'm not paying what you were making as a teacher." So what were your reasons for leaving teaching?

I left because I like education more than I like bus duty, so writing about education is the best of both worlds. Also, I get to go to the bathroom whenever I want, and eat lunch with adults. Mostly, I get more respect now than I got as a teacher. But I taught quite a while ago. Maybe teachers today get more respect? Or do they?

I wish we could change the idea of what "going to school" means. We need smaller public schools, or centers of learning, including experiential learning. Children need more opportunities for online learning and for direct engagement with nature.
Without spirited, smart, and caring teachers, however, not much will work.

As a SPED teacher, the first two things I would change are those awful standardized tests and non-cat systems.

Its better to spend more time in school - which means schools must enrich their pupils' lives by providing quality education and co-curricular activities, which includes sports and other social efforts.
