Equal Rights for LGBT People in El Paso

Equal Rights for LGBT People in El Paso An update on last night's article, with a surprising development: El Paso's Catholic Diocese is with us.

EL PASO -- Without saying a word, the City Council on Tuesday unanimously killed a citizen-initiated ordinance that would have eliminated health insurance benefits for unmarried and same-sex partners of city employees.

The optimist in me says the Catholic Church (locally) sees the bigger picture is aware of how many people in El Paso need all the help they can get with benefits coverage.

The cynic in me says the Catholic church (locally) is taking advantage of the negative light these pentecostals are shedding on themselves and stepping in as the "good guys" (... See Moregood PR) by being more 'understanding'.

Either way, it is a benefit to us and I hope people at least understand the meaning of what the Rev. Stowe said "...some Christian leaders have set the terms in either/or categories that have been insulting towards the homosexual community and have not conveyed a Christian attitude toward their opponents."

Equal Rights for LGBT People in El Paso As expected, the El Paso city council has voted to block the petition against equal benefits for unmarried employees.

It could be a matter of time before the group gathers signatures to force a referendum.

What should be noticed is that El Paso is a city of 500,000 and they are making a big deal of 4,000 signatures. I live in El Paso. It is not diverse nor is it tolerant. It is dominated by the Catholic and Evangelical movement. Again this is an issue with the First Amendment. Seperation of Church and State.

Equal Rights for LGBT People in El Paso

Equal Rights for LGBT People in El Paso A petition has been placed in City Council to overturn a budget provision that entitles the committed domestic partners of city employees to the same benefits that straight married couples get. They have close to 4,500 signatures on their side.

If the city council approves their proposed ordinance, our battle will have... been in vain.

El Paso is full of wonderful talented people who deserve the equal protection of our laws.

Please show up, speak up and advocate! Your message is needed to counter the lies and hateful rhetoric of those who would impose their religious views on YOUR life.

Sign up to speak on Monday the 16th at:
https://www.elpasotexas.gov/muni_clerk/signup_form.asp

OR at the City Council before the meeting starts.

This is a budget issue, which is a council matter that cannot be put to a vote. Even if this petition goes through, it doesn't matter.

The problem, David is that if the issue goes down to the voters they will likely submit is as an ordinance so that the city council cannot breach it during any budgets to come.
