Pain & Orthopedic Evaluation for Yoga Teachers & Students (POETS for Yoga) Introduction - taught by Ellen Heed
• We all love Yoga
• We all struggle in our practice from time to time
• Is part of your struggle related to pain?
• There is a way to know where your pain comes from & what to do about it!
What does “Pain & Orth...opedic Evaluation” mean?
Orthopedic Evaluation means using real-world anatomy & physiology as tools for understanding where pain comes from & how to resolve it.
This CET is fun. It’s functional, and not at all abstract. Ellen will give you usable tools to help you and your students identify and resolve common pain syndromes. Using familiar yoga poses, hands-on work, clays and oils, and most important, your accurate perception so you can learn to eliminate the guess work about where pain comes from.
This CET is a series of five all-day workshops devoted to the “how” and “why” of pain. Each workshop will be divided into two sessions:
• A three-hour morning Lecture-Demonstration
• A four-hour afternoon hands-on Practice Session
We will take a deep look at the four causes of pain in the body:
DAY 1) Practical Biomechanics, a one-day workshop spent on the anatomy and palpation of 12 structural muscles that determine our posture and healthy function. We will learn the pain syndromes caused by imbalances in strength and flexibility in these muscles, and how to use Yoga poses to correct these imbalances.
DAY 2) Biochemistry for Yoga, a one-day workshop that will focus on the realities of living, eating and yoga practice in Asia. We will learn the basics about digestion and how food choices affect our yoga practice. We will study biochemical individuality and metabolic typing as a way to refine our food choices.
DAY 3) What to do About Scars, a one-day workshop where students will learn how to use castor oil and clay-packs to soften and bring new resilience and mobility to scar tissue. Injuries, illnesses and surgeries seem inevitable to us as beings with bodies. This workshop will focus on practical and inexpensive self-care to increase the resiliency of scar tissue.
DAY 4) Working with the Emotional Body, a one-day workshop about how to find emotional holding patterns in the body and how to let go of old beliefs that no longer serve our lives and yoga practice. We will learn the skills necessary to find and release emotional holding and how these old beliefs inhibit our natural brilliance from shining through.
DAY 5) The Art of Adjustment, This one-day workshop will teach both teachers and interested students about the art of sensitive touch and how to transmit Qi or Prana through a yoga adjustment. Touch is the mother of the senses and for Yoga teachers, delivering touch well and accurately can make all the difference in the experience of the student.
