Lonstein Chiropractic & Acupuncture Well, for a long time there was no way you would have caught me skiing in a helmet. But as the boys began skiing, I would have been a hippocrite to demand that they wear helmets and not wear one myself. Our whole family wears helmets as a rule. Over the last few weeks two things happened that made me grateful that the... whole family wears helmets. Even though I have gone entire ski seasons without falling , wouldn't you know it, I took a high speed tumbling fall and stopped (after sliding over 40 yards) with my head between a tree on one side (about 6 inches) and a rock on the other (less than 6 inches). Then, last weekend while skiing with the boys, Julie got hit from behind by a snowboarder who took her feet out from under her and whiplashing her head onto the hardpacked snow which scared the heck out of me (helpless to stop it and I couldn't even get mad at the boarder, he felt terrrible and it was an accident). Anyway, do yourself and your loved ones a favor and wear a helmet while skiing or boarding. Accidents happen in a split second and you don't need a split head.

Helmets, once used exclusively by competitive skiers and snowboarders, have become far more common, even for novices.

I had a patient come in yesterday that we hadn't seen for awhile. I had been treating her for chronic neck pain after a work injury. I asked her how she had been, she told me her general practitioner had referred her to a local pain clinic. I asked her if she was feeling any better, she said she was feeling worse sinc...e we last saw her.
I then asked her what types of treatment she was getting she said they had stopped physical therapy and were now treating her with a few pain medications (opiod based addictive). asked her how long she had been on the meds and if the Doctors had increased the dosage. She said a number of months, and yes they had both changed her medications and increased dosage. Once again I asked her are you feeling better? And again she said, no worse. I asked her why she continued to keep taking the meds if they don't help? She said I can't stop taking them.
Sad, the result of unrealistic expectations on her part, well meaning physicians lacking tools and insight into chronic pain. And a pharmaceutical industry that loves to sell you pills, forever.
