Pssst, keep this between us:

EVERY home in America has a unisex bathroom!

Some of the Anti-ERA arguments include that it will demasculinize men because it will make them have to pee in unisex bathrooms---quite ridiculous, isn't it, that that's the only defense they can come up with against it. The truth is that they don't want women to be equal citizens, perhaps because they think that it gives them too much power. In a society where women just recently got the right to divorce on the grounds of marital rape, this would make sense. So tell everyone you know to write their legislators, especially in the states where it hasn't been ratified, in support of the ERA. And no, ERA doesn't stand for laundry detergent!

These are the specific provisions of the bill, for those of you who aren't really sure what it is, exactly:

Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.

Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.

Actually, Jeff, it is an amendment--written and drawn up just any other amendment has been drawn up. There is no deadline for any amendment--it was supposed to have been ratified in 1982, and it didn't work out because enough states did not vote for it. I can still be relieved, but it only has 35 out of 38 states signed onto it. It needs three more, and anti-equality legislators in those respective states have not signed on to support it, logically. You should do some research before you make statements like that. I am the VP of a women's rights group, and I know the history of the amendment inside and out. Go to www.eracampaign.net, and read more about it--you will find it quite fascinating how regressive some people in our wonderful country can be. :-)

Equality has its own timetable, Jeff McLeod. How long was it between the Civil War and the Civil Rights Act?
