About Me:
Imagine Alaska the way it can be. Remember America the way it's supposed to be. I can, and I do, and that's why I'm running for the United States Congress.

I got to Alaska as soon as I could, and I came the long way around to get here. Just out of college in 1983, I got a job in Antarctica. I spent three seasons on "The Ice," first as a field assistant, then as a guide, and finally as an enforcement officer for the U.S. Antarctic Program. I relished my time working in remote stations, aboard ships, and in the field.

I pursued the Antarctic – including graduate school and service with the federally commissioned U.S. Antarctic Safety Review Panel -- until my sights turned north. After graduating from law school in 1990, I moved to Anchorage and became a law clerk on the Alaska State Court of Appeals. When I got here, I knew I was going to stay; I was captured by the people and the place.

From 1991 to 1993, I worked as a state prosecutor in Anchorage and rural Alaska. After spending the 1993-94 season in the Antarctic, I opened my own law practice. Beginning in 1996, I served in the Alaska State Legislature for ten years. After my first term in office, I was chosen by my peers to lead the House Democrats, a position I held for eight years. In 2006, I was the Alaska Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor.

Thank you in advance for your support. It would be an honor to serve you in the United States House of Representatives.

On the issues:

I want to fuel this campaign with good ideas and good will. It's about what we're for, not who we're against. It's about restoring hope and keeping promises. Please join me in leading our state and our country in a new direction on the economy, the war, health care, education, renewable energy, and ethics.
