WSU Extension Puget Sound Forest Stewardship
WSU Extension Puget Sound Forest Stewardship It has been a tough year, but there have been a lot of bright spots and I think there are some things worth celebrating, especially how this community of forest owners has come together. I am thinking of perhaps a first ever Forest Stewardship Social - a potluck at the Everett Extension building that is purely for fun, community, getting to know fellow landowners, and celebrating. What do y'all think?
WSU Extension Puget Sound Forest Stewardship Fantastic news in Snohomish County today - the County Council fully restored our budget. This means a much brighter future for our ag program, master gardeners, and for the Extension office as a whole, including forest stewardship. A great opportunity for Snohomish County folks to thank their councilmembers.

The end of WSU Extension in King County? The budget proposal by the King County Executive would eliminate almost all of Extension in King County and close that office. Under this proposal, there would be no more forest stewardship classes or any sort of newsletters or consultations for King County Forest Owners. WSU Extension Puget Sound Forest Stewardship Fall is here, which means I get a lot of forest health calls. A few tips of things to look for that can be helpful in diagnosing the problem: Pattern of foliage decline, color, when you noticed the problem, evidence on needles and/or stem of tree. Keep in mind that in all cases I'm just making an educated guess at the problem and sometimes I don't have any idea at all.

I have some more information about the Riparian Management Zone (RMZ) rule change. The Desired Future Condition (DFC) basal area target for all site classes is now 325 sqft when the stand is 140 years old. Previosly it ranged from 190 (site V) to 285 (site I) sqft. This rule change goes into effect tomorrow (9/25/09). …What this means is that if you are harvesting timber along a fish-bearing stream and you wish to do one of the partial harvest options in the inner zone, the leave tree requirements are greater. DNR has new forest practices forms and an updated version of the DFC worksheet program available to reflect this rule change at http://www.dnr.wa.gov/BusinessPermits/To

Do not be alarmed - this is their natural time to shed their interior foliage. These orange bits will blow out in our first fall windstorm and the tree will look normal again.

There was an interesting article in the Oregonian last week about a movement in the Portland area to connect home builders and buyers with local wood. We put a lot of emphasis on locally grown wood, what about locally grown fiber? Is there market potential for wood that is locally grown? What would it take to develop that type of market?
