Joan Gibbs-Vaughan This is just a little note to say "Thank YOU" for all you each do to help save lives! I tend to remember our fire departments, police departments, medical staff, and military as life savers.. and now I want to do the same for each of YOU! During this Thanksgiving week.. I want to say "thank you" for working hard, lon...g, odd hours and for caring enough about people to enter this field! ((HUGS)) of thanks and many smiles to you all for what you do. We DO appreciate you!! :-)

Mandy ok I am engaged to a paramedic in rural Sask...... Honestly in rural communities the ambulance services are nothing more than a glorified taxi service. He has been in this industry for going on 11 years and in those 11 years of working this job I have come to realize that there are more bullshit calls and "transfers" t...han anything.... I can count on one hand how many times he has actually "made a difference in anyones life" and on 2 hands cold count how many times his co-workers have "made a difference". I dont know how things are in cities but in rural the EMS industry is a joke... My fiance will say the same.. It is also clearly an industry that anyone can get into. its not all blood and gore. Its not something that requires any brains either... this is clearly proven by his co workers... To those of you who have saved lives and made a difference that awesome for you but for the most part working ems (in rural) is like mworkin for a cab service....

It is no different in Urban areas. I work full time for the busiest EMS system in the U.S. per capita...Detroit EMS. People that call for BS and silliness all the time live everywhere, not just in the country.

While we may not do transfers as we are a 911 service only, we still get the same lousy calls although we do get a LOT of violent calls, but none the less, we too are a taxi service for the ignorant.

I also work in an urban area and I wouldn't write off rural EMS personel. Sometimes they have skills that far excede that of their urban counterparts because when they have a pt. close to death they actually have to be able to perfrom as opposed to just hauling but to a hospital 5 min. down the road. Just giving a little credit to the rural guys/gals.

As someone who works rural EMS in Sask. I feel I should say something. As it has already been pointed out, bullshit calls happen everywhere. Lets keep in mind that those calls are what keep our call volume up so that we have ambulance services in many rural areas. And although we may not actually "save lives" on a daily basis, we do "make a ... See Moredifference" in many peoples lives. Even if it is minor in most cases. I almost agree that anyone can do our job, as long as they are relatively strong for lifting and they can deal with vomit/blood/gore (blood and gore happens everywhere eventually).
