ExpatExpert.com A three part series on the new Canadian citizenship rules, including one about expats in particular, ran in the Vancouver Sun while I was away. Here is the link to one of the most relevant articles for expats.

That was when Frank heard about the changes the Conservative government had made to the Citizenship Act. Suddenly, Frank has a lot to worry about.

I recommend highly reading the link Susanna posted above to her blog for future expats (which I'm going to add to my website links!). She makes points similar to those I make to repatriating spouses who come home feeling tired and depressed and think it's just the move home when actually, it's the stage of life...like me, Susanna highly recommends seeing a doctor to sort out the muddle...the joys of being mobile women!! Thanks Susanna for posting that link.

Valerie Hi Robin, Olivia introduced her private member's bill to amend the citizenship act on wednesday. I'm curious to see what will happen now. Her website also has a petition if anyone wants to print it and have their friends and family sign it - postage is free of charge if mailed within Canada.

Ms. Olivia Chow (Trinity—Spadina, NDP) moved for leave to introduce Bill C-397, An Act to amend the Citizenship Act (persons born abroad).

Although in his answer two months ago to my questions in the House of Commons, Minister Kenney indicated that he would review Bill C-37—nothing has been done. In fact, Jason Kenney is under the impression ...

I should add that Olivia Chow is planning to introduce a private member's bill to amend Bill C-37. Time to put some pressure on the government!

ExpatExpert.com A new report on expat return on investment by PhD candidate and owner of The Trailing Spouse.com Yvonne McNulty shows, among other things, that expats aren't waiting to repatriate to jump to another company, but are actively seeking new assignments during their posting! ExpatExpert.com I wanted to say that Brandie's comments (below) about my first Culture Shock book made me very happy especially as I'm just about to deliver the manuscript to the editor in order to bring that book back into print by June! It was then called "A Wife's Guide" but now will have the title I wanted for it: "A Broad Abroad". Obviously people like Brandie just confirmed it's still useful!

Nancy
Robin, I have loaned that original book to more friends than you can imagine! I met you in Singapore in 2002. You kindly gave me tips when we found out we were being sent to Toronto in 2004. Now back in the Chicago area, your books sits on the book shelf--who knows, maybe it will get dusted off someday for another expat assignment! I just like knowing it's there.

Nancy, never say never....you may use my book again one day and the zillion of other terrific books by expat authors that have since followed. In re-issuing it (and re-reading it!) I realized not only how little has actually changed for accompanying spouses but also, that it really was the first of its kind... and encouraged so many others to write books about 'the life'....great books and blogs too! Hang on to your copy!
Brandie

Brandie Hi Robin! I just wanted to write you to let you know that your book Culture Shock has helped me out a lot. I am a SAHM from the U.S. with 2 toddlers (5 & 3) going on our 2nd year as expats in Romania, our first international assignment. Yeah, a real culture shock it has been. I was reading your book and saying "yes!!! That's me!" so many times! It's great to know that we're not going through this alone. Thank you again, you're an inspiration!

Gretchen Young Hi Robin - I really enjoyed your talk at the Tanglin Club. I've only been in Singapore a month but so much of what you said rang true. I'm reading your Global Nomads book now to help with the rest of our time here. Thanks.

Donna Hello Robin - I'm a long-time fan for 8+ years, your books and the yahoo group (is that still in existence?) saved me from a complete meltdown on our first foreign assignment. My husband and I are at it again - this time childless. I recommend your books to every expat mom and wife I know. Best!
