Here is a little background information about the Gran-daddy of them all.

We will be compiling some for a future festival possibility.

What is the Fringe?

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe started in 1947 when 8 theatre groups turned up uninvited to the first Edinburgh International Festival. Over the years, more performers came to Edinburgh to perform beyond the EIF. In 2009, nearly 19,000 performers, from 60 different countries ranging from Albania to Zimbabwe, will take to the stage for over 34,000 performances of 2,098 shows in 265 venues.

How is the Fringe organised?

Since it started the Fringe has taken pride in its open access nature. This means that no single individual or committee decided who can and cannot perform on the Fringe. It is up to the performers, producers and the venues to decide to put a show on in the Fringe. In 1969 the Festival Fringe Society was formed to provide information, a central box office and a published programme of all the Fringe shows.
Central to the Society's constitution is that there shall be no artistic vetting from any individual such as an artistic director. The Fringe Society has a Board of Trustees who work all year round to make sure that everything is in place to produce the world’s biggest explosion of culture every August.

How do you make sure that something as complex as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is inclusive?

When the Fringe started 63 years ago it was as a response by theatre groups who had been deliberately excluded from the Edinburgh International Festival. Inclusiveness is at the very heart of what the Fringe is about. The Fringe is not only the world’s largest arts event; it is the standard bearer for open access arts festivals. So by its very nature the Fringe is inclusive. So during this year’s Fringe there will be several opportunities for everyone to help support the further evolution of the Fringe Society and we’ll be asking you to tell us what you think of the work we’ve achieved over the last year and where you’d like us to develop things further into the future.

Join us for a weekend of art on the edge as we Experience Long Island together. It is rare that an opportunity comes along where you would have a chance to be the FIRST to do anything. Long Island’s premier performance venue, Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, has joined with The Artists group, Long Island’s premier independent arts organization, to present a ground breaking, once in a life time, never been done before event, Experience Long Island 2009. As we were nostalgically pining for the days of “Woodstock”, remembering the lunar landing and the 69 Mets, the organizers of our own happening were working feverishly to finalize the plans for this history maker. Be there, with us as we unveil a happening that people will be wishing they had been at 40 years from now. Three days of imagination gone WILD!

A Taste of Long Island and Beyond

A little tapas for the senses is poised for the picking as you are invited to Experience Long Island 2009 this fall on September 25 26 27. Just when you thought it was safe to go back to your daily routine, Experience Long Island is here at Tilles Center on the C.W.Post Campus of Long Island University. Autumn will never be the same after you Experience Long Island on the fringe. See past and present Poet Laureates from Nassau & Suffolk Counties saying what’s on their minds on “The Isle of Words”, have an interactive demonstration of pulling molten glass by Colby Glass and witness a human challenge in the person of Zafar Gill from Pakistan breaking his own Guinness World Record. Relax with an Art Walk through the “Inner Ring” Art Exhibit in Tilles Center and a sculpture “hunt” with works from festival artists and the Hillwood Art Museum

The Atrium will be transformed into the “Mall of Imagination” so you may purchase memorabilia from and vote for your favorite fringing artists.

A $5 Admission bracelet will be your entry to purchase tickets for any of these daytime performances on Saturday or Sunday. Prices range from free to $10. You may buy tickets by going to Tilles Center website: http://www.tillescenter.org or grab an order form to FAX or snail mail or call 516-299-3100 or drop by and visit the box office.

We have so many ways to get tickets that you have no excuse, but if you need more convincing; each evening will culminate in a performance on Tilles mainstage. All Tilles Center, mainstage, evening, performance tickets are $20 - $40. Friday September 25, start at 7PM with the jazz stylings of the Steve Adelson Stick Tet & special guest Rachel Z, “A Series of Transitions” with the dance theatrics of Just Left of Center, “Ocean Dreams” is pianist Jane Leslies musical visions combined with the vocal stylings of Kara Cornell, and the solo show, “Decades Apart- Reflections of Three Gay Men” from Rick Pulos. On Saturday September 26, starting again at 7PM we will present, “Songs Unplugged + Unrecorded” by Singer/Songwriter Eden White, “Divergence” modern dance by Circle of Dance Repertory Company, “The Neon Man and Me”. as seen on PBS, performed by Slash Coleman and the rousing Spanish dance of “Por Callejeros” from Pasion Flamenca. Our closing performance on Sunday September 27at 3PM will feature the “Floyd Explosion” with the 12 member Suck it Easy Band,the Post Concert Dance Company featuring the choreography of company graduates Gina Allis and Christine Guglia, the uninhibited dance theater of Mad Cap Dance and the musings of renaissance man Jay Jii. Three days of amazing entertainment for less than the price of one Broadway show. Enjoy great emerging and professional performers for an incredible value at an event whose time has come.
