Great list, thank you.. We also have always done the "buy the prize with the candy" thing-this year with a toddler in tow I will be going ahead of everyone with safe candies for our neighbors to give to my children. I am afraid my little one will put a candy in her mouth before I can get it away from her-she's fast.

Just curious if anyone has experience with emailing companies for clarification as to vague ingredient descriptions such as "spices" or "natural flavoring". Is there a way to get beyond the first response of "it's proprietary"? My son has multiple food allergies...it isn't a case of I'd like to know what is in the food, it's a case of I have to ... Read Moreknow what is in the food. Is there a way to get them to reveal the ingredients? Do I not have a right to know what I may be putting into my son's or my own body? That's just weird. It is little comfort for them to say it is natural by FDA's definition...poison oak is also natural.... Sorry to vent...it's just frustrating. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Last year I was asked about unique ways to flavor sugar-free baked goods. Vanilla beans and homemade vanilla extract is what i recommended because they are the most pure form of vanilla. Commercially produced extracts often contain sweeteners and syrups, while homemade vanilla extract does not. A great source for vanilla beans is www.beanilla.com (... Read MoreBeanilla Trading Company). The store offers really high quality vanilla products at inexpensive prices. Their staff is also very helpful and can answer many questions. I just wanted to pass this along because i know it helped many during this time of year last year.

If your child has gluten/wheat allergy please be sure to tell the teacher my son had an awful reaction to playdough just from playing with it. there are some great wheat free/gluten free ones out there, you can serch the web and find them. I also will supply his classroom with the safe kind.

I agree with the Back to School food allergy safety alerts - I know many children with food allergies and other allergies and try to be an advocate for the safety of these children; I too have allergies which involve food so I have to be on the "alert" for safety in my own life.

We walk every October in NY. It's an important day for us first because its great to be surrounded by thousands of people who really understand, and second because FAAN does such great work we love helping to raise money to support their efforts!
