Finding locally grown family farm foods is probably easier than you think.
Farmers markets are cropping up in towns, suburbs and cities from coast to coast. Restaurants and grocery stores are featuring locally grown foods more often. U-Pick programs let you pick your own fruits and veggies for a set price per bushel. Click here to find places that sell family farm foods near you.

I highly recommend Michael Pollans book, Omnivores Dilemma.

Thanks to the Good Food Movement, local produce is more accessible, but pasture-raised meats from family farms, can be harder to track down. The certifications to process and sell meat direct to consumers can be expensive, making it hard for some family farmers to sell their meat at local farmers markets.

What? Tell me where to go here in Southern California and I'll go. Local govt is only as strong as you let it be. Once they get to the big league, they don't care what we think anymore. Set these politicians straight before it's too late.

thats right! we must make a stand and do whats best for our family and community

Even with laws designed to protect us from foodborne illness and unsafe foods, food scares are increasingly common. Many of these laws have been designed around the dominant industrial food system in our country. Instead, we need new laws that don't favor quantity, but instead promote quality food, grown on small family farms.
Learn what you can do to make sure your food and family farmers are protected.

I agree with Kristen. It's those megacorporations and their powerful lobbies that ruin everything for the small family farmers. The number of animals per factory farm is staggering. The movie "Fast Food Nation" gives us some idea of how factory slaughtering works. E-coli in beef comes about because the colon is often cut during the slaughtering process and the meat is infected with feces. If not cooked to the proper temperature, the feces you eat will make you sick.

Amanda Caudill Another bill you should oppose, HR 2454, the "climate bill" or cap and trade. This will lay a horrendous amount of taxes on farms, especially ones trying to scrape by. If you read carefully, this bill is not about helping the planet, but taxing anything that creates carbon emissions, electricity, gasoline...the list is endless. This will put blue collared Americans in the poor house. MIT speculated the average household to have an excess of $3100 in taxes annually, not to mention the price of inflation because manufacturers will be taxed at a MUCH MUCH higher rate...
Amanda at 4:19pm June 29
This has also went through the house, it will be voted on in senate I believe the 7th of July. Please research.

Jay Imerman I think it's high time that organizations with like-minded pursuits work together. The Weston A. Price Foundation, and their advocacy organization the Farm To Consumer Legal Defense Fund, have fought hard to support the small farmer in their struggle to survive being squeezed by big agribusiness and government agencies like the USDA and FDA, as well as state agencies. I suggest calling Sally Fallon and arranging to work together on campaigns and events.

Stephanie Powe Gonyea Call, write and email your Congressman and tell them to vote against HR 2749! This bill will destroy small farms, not to mention it's completely unconstitutional!!!

We're getting ready for our meeting next Thursday with Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack. We'll be bringing 7,000+ petitions that we've collected that call on the Secretary to step in and set a fair price for milk that reflects the increased cost of production our dairy farmers are facing.
If you haven't already signed our petition, please do so now!

Great graphic!

The way I help dairy farmers is I buy my milk directly from them. It is pastured, Organic, and unprocessed. The farmer gets a fair price for the milk without middlemen, and I get healthy local product that tastes phenomenal. Check out the Weston A. Price Foundation on Facebook and the Web, for information on safety and source facts you should know.

Amy Senter Oelberg My local family farm that I frequent just started caring Milk, to go along with it's plants and produce. The skim milk is so creamy it tastes like 2%/whole mix. Yummy! If more people would buy this quality product locally imagine where we would be in a few years. I advertise them by word of mouth telling anyone who will listen go and buy from Mt. Olympus Farms in Ruther Glen Virginia. My husband will bite into his tomatoes and say "You went to the farm again didn't you?". This amazing Farm is owned buy Mary and Ken West and voted Virginia's Small family Farm Of 2008!
Mary at 3:23pm June 9
How would I locate a local farm that would sell milk? There ar e lots of farms here for produce. Milk and eggs would be awesome.
Amy at 7:15pm June 9
I would go to the closest one and ask for other farms in the area. Find one that crop shares too and that will be good start. The local Farmers market is a really good place to start come Friday/Sat AM. They will have ideas on food prep, where to get your hands on what locally , and all that yummy food too. So this could be your project to start ... Read Moreand pull you out of your funk. You'll feel better knowing your family is eating healthy and as you cut out Growth Hormones used in big chain food supplies. You will naturally start losing some weight from detoxicing that crud out. Aren't you happier all ready. Now go eat a melon!

Debby Bowles today's farmers don't stand a decent chance against the federal government. because of the federal government rules, etc it has deterred the number of farmers. when farmers are told what to grow or what to sell, then they cannot be decent hardworking farmers. there are less and less farmers. i grew up as a farm kid and through the years have watched farmers go out of business, sell their pastures only for them to become new homes. please remember your farmers in corropution of government control over the little guy.
Sheri at 8:42pm June 13
What is going on here? Why doesn't the govt make our own safe food supply a top priority? Are we supposed to become dependent on foreign countries for all our basic needs? I'd rather drive an old used car and have plenty of good food, knowing that our families and friends are working to keep America fed. What monster is making the rules here? Fire them all and vote in some farmers and factory workers!

Very sad and serious changes in America over the last 30 years:
a) family farms are declining in numbers.
b) small towns have died..no self contained business communities which supported the townspeople and surrounding farms...Mayberry is dead!

As if their plight was not difficult enough: Farmer handcuffed, fingerprinted, photographed for a bounced check. According to the farmer, he never spoke with the sheriff quoted, and never swore at anyone.

That’s the mantra to follow when seeking out family farm foods at grocery stores and restaurants. Tell the manager at your supermarket that you want to see more produce and meats from local farms sold at the store. Choose restaurants that use fresh ingredients from family farms.
