Jackie Yoshi I think women should be able to show off their caring and compassion...with Care Bears knock-off t-shirts with their own custom tummy symbols! Okay, yeah I'm a child of the 80's, and think it'd be so cool and amusing to have a feminist protest wearing Care Bear tummy symbol shirts, and doing a Care Bear Stare thing..lo...l. Yeah, I'm joking around a bit.

Ian Iverson Every movement has a few image-conscious people who alienate others within the movement. You must not be threatened by these people or feel that you have anything to prove to them. It will only weaken your stance. Keep advocating, Maymay!

Feminism: n. Belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. The movement organized around this. Whether you're a hardcore feminist embracing your beliefs, or someone who just wa...

Femquake
Feminism is about gender equality, and until we have gender equality, everyone of all genders will continue to pay a horrifically painful cost one way or another. In feeling that Femquake somehow belongs to men because a man started the page, Anonymous is playing a simplistic (and very sad) zero-sum game where the acti...ons taken by people of one gender necessarily invalidates the value of another.
That is an old, ugly game that can never lead to equality. Feminists ought never to play it.

Femquake
An honest curiosity: how many of you feel that this Facebook page/Femquake as an idea/message of empowerment "means less" because I self-identify as a feminist man?
There is a debate about this in the comments here: http://maybemaimed.com/2010/04/27/femqua ke-fallout-feminism-the-internet-and-boo bquake-and-brainquake/
Fur...ther debate and a response, also with an interesting comment thread, is here: http://newfeministmom.blogspot.com/2010/ 04/men-as-feminist-leaders.html

Femquake
We need to find a way for thoughtful, feminist men (specifically straight men) to express their sexual desires without automatically being treated as sexist, entitled louts and yahoos. This is the flip side of that issue. We need to find a way for thoughtful, feminist women to express our sexual desirability without au...tomatically being treated as dumb, exploited bimbos who don't understand what men really think of us. As Gayle Rubin once wrote, "I, for one, did not join the women's movement to be told how to be a good girl."
Our bodies. Our right to decide.

The main feminist objection to Boobquake seemed to be that the women who participated were letting ourselves be exploited. They argued that many men reacted to the event with sexist, "Show us your tits!" idiocy—a reaction McCreight should have foreseen, and was therefore responsible for. ...

Femquake Boobquake, Brainquake, and Femquake have all been added to Wikipedia. All of these events have drawn attention to the important feminist debates about who can advocate for gender justice and how to do so in an appropriate way.

Boobquake, which took place on April 26, 2010, was devised by Jennifer McCreight, a senior at Purdue University, in response to news reports that Hojatoleslam Kazem Seddiqi had blamed women who dress immodestly for earthquakes. ...

Recently, an Iranian cleric, Kazem Sedighi, stated that it is women’s immodest clothing which leads to promiscuity and is responsible for earthquakes and other natural disasters. The news quickly spread around the world and once again the Islamic Republic of Iran became the butt of many jokes. ...

Summer Cox Russell Thanks to the founders of Boob/Brain/Femquake for giving women an opportunity to express and empower themselves in whatever way they see fit. I wrote about Boobquake yesterday, which turned out to be a bit of a Brainquake in itself. :) I would like to share the note I posted at the end of the day, as it seems to reso...nate with a lot of other people and maybe sheds a different light on what so many people looked at as just "an excuse to be slutty."
Some of you may have noticed that I've been posting silly and shameless pictures today in honor of this "Boobquake" thing. I was planning to write a little about body image and acceptance and all the reasons I chose to participate...

Jennifer McCreight, Negar Mottahedeh and Golbarg Bashi, and myself have all received criticism for supporting gender justice in our own ways, and the criticism is as diverse as ever. That’s no surprise, and again, I think it’s actually a beautiful thing. Having this diversity empowers people to choose the form of activ...ism that’s right for them.
And if you don’t see what you like, you can self-empower yourself to go make it.

Heather Roberts totally awesome!!!!! Happy Femquake day!!!

Bobby Williams I wish I had heard of this page BEFORE it was over. As a genderqueer who wanted to wear a sexy bra all day over "his" chest in order to support this grand quakerery, I also approve of femquake's ideal of counter-acting oppression with a quick 1-2 combo. The feminine spirit deserves the right to do as they please, regar...dless of anyone else's say so. Keep up the good work.

Femquake
Femquake day is fast nearing its end, but it was a lot of fun, and the positivity generated on this page alone made my day!
Femquake is an idea: a celebration of unity and an attempt at “more speech” as a response to "offensive" speech. For freedom to truly ring, we must do our best to always assume good faith, and resp...ond to offenses nonviolently. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, "We may never be strong enough to be entirely nonviolent in thought, word and deed. But we must keep nonviolence as our goal and make strong progress towards it."
This idea, and this kind of “more speech” activity, doesn’t need to be confined to today.
So, y’know, the earthquakes may be hypothetical, but the aftershocks throughout the divisive feminist debates could be real!
Make another Femquake happen merely by adding a new event to this page (using the Events tab). You choose the date. You choose the time. As long as you're intention is to honor a feminist who inspires compassion among different groups of people and who celebrates the value inherent in the diversity of human sexuality, any day you want can be a Femquake day.
Now go and ENJOY LIFE, because working towards bringing pleasure and joy and equality and opportunity to everyone is what feminism is all about!
