Not long ago, I met a woman named Cara at Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery. She led me to a computer kiosk tucked under a big gothic archway at the main entrance. The computer allows you to browse the names and resting places of the 560,000 people buried in

I have seen a bunch of interesting cemeteries and lots of countryside I would not have otherwise experienced on my travels as a Find a Grave photo volunteer.

I have discovered local history photographing graves in cemetaries close to my home--cemetaries I've driven by for years and years, but never set foot in. Once in awhile, I find a mystery to research and information that might be worth developing into an article for a local newspaper or genealogical publication. Cemetary walking is also good exercise.

You can sign up to be a Find a Grave photo volunteer. Just put in your zip code and get E-mailed photo requests for cemeteries in your area. I've visited a dozen or more cemeteries in the past 2 years to take photos.

Coming out just in time for the Halloween season are the strange, startling and utterly fascinating stories behind the world’s most notorious celebrity deaths in MORBID CURIOSITY: The Disturbing Demises of the Famous and Infamous (Perigee Trade Paperback; September 29, 2009; $13.95) by celebrity journalist Alan W. Petrucelli. From historical figures like Attila the Hun and Sir Walter Raleigh to contemporary names like Heath Ledger and Anna Nicole Smith, the deaths of the rich and famous provoke endless speculation and tabloid fodder.

MORBID CURIOSITY will answer these burning questions:

I always liked Michael Jackson. I hope he did not do the things he was accused of...but...God is the one he has to answer to. Let him rest in peace and remember the great music he gave us!

I met a cousin of my husbands this way. My husband and I are President and Secretary of our family reunion. I have posted information on each decreased relative as I get the bio. Now that is a great link for everyone to see exactly how we are related and read the obit anytime. Since there is no fee to belong, it is available to everyone. I enter what I know, keep updating as I find out more and offer to be transferred to a closer family member - if they decline, that's ok.

Well, due to this role, I have encountered one picture taking volunteer who apparently did not want to give up any of the Memorials he had established (not a relative). He made quite a fuss, but finally gave in.

However, the up side is now I can be sympathetic with others who wish to manage memorials I have established. ... Read More
