In this lecture, prominent legal expert Gerry Simpson will discuss the complex relationship between image making and cultural and political meaning within the framework of international war tribunals.

Susan Sontag remarked that ‘war and photography are inseparable’. So too now—and at least since 1945—are war and law. I...n this presentation, Simpson considers some of the iconic photography of war crimes trials, from images of twenty-one stupefied Nazis at Nuremberg through the office functionary, Adolf Eichmann in his glass booth to Slobodan Milosevic and Saddam Hussein and their almost nostalgic gestures of defiance in the face of law and camera.

Gerry Simpson is a Visiting Professor of Public International Law at the London School of Economics and holds a Chair of Law at the University of Melbourne Law School where he is Director of the Global Justice Studio. His latest book is Law, War and Crime (2007) and he is currently writing on the idea of international law as a literary enterprise.

No bookings will be taken for this event. Gold coin donations gratefully accepted.

Simryn Gill: Inland is a survey of photography and takes place in a photography gallery. It is important to declare at the outset, that while photography forms a significant and wondrous part of her practice, Simryn Gill does not consider herself a photographer; “For me, the taking of photographs is another tool in my ...bag of strategies, in that awkward pursuit of coherence we sometimes call art”.1 Simryn Gill: Inland embraces this conundrum as an entry point for considering Gill’s photography, and how photography might function more broadly as a way of engaging with the world.

David Lloyd and Kelly Hussey-Smith will discuss the latest edition of The Australian PhotoJournalist: Picturing Human Rights. Compiled in response to the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the editorial board sought to evaluate the success of the declaration and to expose the stories of thos...e who have fallen through the cracks of this most noble vision. The Australian PhotoJournalist (APJ) is a crusading journal provoking debate, challenging entrenched orthodoxies and seeking to position journalism and documentary practice within its more noble traditions.Importantly the APJ seeks to give voice to those marginalised, forgotten or ignored.

David Lloyd is the Deputy Director of the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. He is Executive Editor of The Australian PhotoJournalist and a documentary practitioner. Kelly Hussey-Smith was the Issue Editor of Picturing Human Rights, and is a recent graduate of the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, majoring in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography.

is this the standard? This woman claims to operate from a feminist perspective and yet she makes work fetishising her own body, much to the approval of an entirely male panel. Rehashing first wave seventies feminist propaganda art work is redundant enough. Warping it into a vapid aesthetic excercise only further reduces the merit of the prize that has been awarded. I think the viewing public deserves more than this.

In Villain Justin Clemens invokes the spirit of medieval French poet, vagabond and thief François Villon, through his bold, contemporary translation of Villon’s famous ballads but also in new work, ranging from the violent and obscene to the lyrical and sublime — sometimes within a single verse. Villain unleashes a war... of forms; perfect sonnets clash with mock haiku, heroic couplets and free verse, all directed towards capturing the contemporary world. But Villain also ranges over time and place, events and people, encompassing science-fiction creatures as well as medieval French criminals.

The meeting of Villon and Clemens is one of true minds. These are snaky, savage poems, charged with an electric intelligence.—Chloe Hooper

Villain is published by Hunter Publishers and will be for sale in the CCP Shop for $19.95. Justin Clemens will be signing books at the launch.
